CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team dropped its first two games of the University of South Florida Tournament on Friday. The Big Green (1-8) lost both games by a close margin, losing 4-2 to #18 Oklahoma State (23-6) and then 3-0 to North Florida (12-16).
In the first game of the day, the Big Green scored the first run of the game off back-to-back hits by Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) before a fielder's choice to Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) loaded the bases in the first inning. Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) was hit by a pitch scoring the Ramirez from third to get Dartmouth on the board first.
Oklahoma State tied it up in the second inning as a double down the left field line scored the runner from second. Then in the fourth two more came across for OSU when the Dartmouth catcher overthrew to second and a runner scored from third. Then an infield single plated one more.
OSU added another run in the sixth inning off another double to go up 4-1.
Dartmouth tacked on one more run in the last inning by loading the bases with hits by Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) and Ramirez before Khalil was hit-by-pitch. Yee scored from third scored when the Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) walked.
Rookie Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) went the complete game in her third start of the season. She struck out two while allowing seven hits. Sarah Odom started in the circle for OSU and threw three innings, allowed one unearned run off four hits. She was relieved by Taylor Marcum who picked up the win, allowing one run off five hits. Anna Whiddon picked up her third save of the season when she came in to get the last out of the game.
In the second contest of the day, North Florida jumped on the board first with a run in the opening inning. In Dartmouth's half of the second a walk to Hubert followed by a Khalil single put runners at first and second for the Big Green. A one-out was issued to Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) as Dartmouth threatened but unfortunately the runners stayed stranded.
The Osprey's tried to get more runs in the third but Dartmouth's defense held. The Big Green got two one in the bottom half of the frame when Yee reached on a single and Ramirez was hit by a pitch but both runners stayed at first and second.
North Florida added to its total in the fourth with two runs off two singles and a double. A walk to Khalil had Dartmouth with a chance to get on the board but UNF's Shaina Dent struck out the final two batters of the frame stranding Khalil.
The Osprey's put runners on through the next three innings but the Big Green was able to prevent any more runs from coming across. In the fifth Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) was the last Dartmouth batter to reach base on a single as the Big Green never threatened in the final innings.
Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) began the game in the circle for Dartmouth. She went four innings giving up five hits while striking out two. Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) came on in relief as she had just four hits on her while also striking out two.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow, continuing at the USF Tournament with games against Maryland at Noon and Illinois at 3:00.
