CAPE COD, Mass. — Sophomore Marietta Smith (Mount Prospect, Ill.) improved by 12 strokes in the second and final round of the Dartmouth Spring Invitational at the Cape Cod Country Club, carding a four-over 75 to lead the Big Green to a third-place finish with a 342-327—669 on the par-71 course. Harvard cruised to the team title with a 301-288—589, besting runner-up Siena by 38 strokes.
The 75 posted by Smith was the best round by any of the seven Dartmouth golfers in either round, and by a full seven strokes. Smith finished the tournament with an 87-75—162, good for 13th place out of the 30 golfers, while junior captain Katie Gulemi (Fairfield, Conn.) scored an 82 each day for a 164 to place 15th.
Sophomore Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) was the third finisher for the Big Green with an 87-82—169, tying for 17th, freshman Colleen Carroll (Bettendorf, Iowa) came in 21st with an 86-88—174, and sophomore Kathleen Quirk (Kansas City, Mo.) shot an 87-90—177 to come in 24th.
Two Big Green freshmen participated as individuals and performed well. Julie Campbell (Bozeman, Mont.) shot an 85-82—167 to place 16th while Emily Hyman (Chappaqua, N.Y.) carded an 84-86—170, good for 19th place.
Harvard's Christine Cho had one of the only two rounds of the weekend below par today with a one-under 70, winning medalist honors at two-over (144) for the two-round tournament, four strokes ahead of teammate Claire Sheldon.
The women play again next weekend at a tournament hosted by Columbia.
