ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth softball team began its Ivy season at Cornell, losing both games of a twinbill to the defending Ivy champion Big Red on Friday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field. The Big Red improved to 14-7 (2-0 Ivy) with 5-2 and 5-3 victories. Dartmouth slipped to 1-17 (0-2 Ivy) with the losses.
Cornell began the day scoring three runs in the first inning of each game and never
trailed, though the Big Red did need a two-run homer in
the sixth inning of game two to claim the sweep.
In game one, Elizabeth Dalrymple struck out 14 Big Green hitters and allowed just
six base runners in the 5-2 victory. Cornell scored three unearned runs
in the first, then added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.
Dartmouth's only runs came on a two-run blast by Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) in the
seventh to avoid the shutout.
Khalil was a true bright spot for the Big Green as she went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. In the circle, Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) took the loss.
Game Two saw the Big Red jump out to a 3-0 edge on the strength of four
straight hits to start the contest. The Big Green rallied to tie in the
fifth, but the two run homer in the sixth was the difference.
Lauren Marx improved to 4-1 on the mound by allowing just two Dartmouth hits in the final 2.2 innings.
Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.), the Big Green's leading hitter tried to single-handidly win the game for her team as the senior went 3-for4 with a run scored. Dartmouth collected seven hits in the game. Rookie Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) got the loss on the mound as she struck out a season-best six batters.
The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Princeton, beginning at 12:30.
