PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Playing a rescheduled two games on Wednesday, the Dartmouth softball team split an important North Division doubleheader with Brown as the Big Green won the first game, 4-3 but the Bears took the second, 2-1.
Brown (18-21, 5-11) pitcher Kristin Chin got the loss in the first game but had the game winning home run in the second as Dartmouth (14-23, 11-5) now sits two games back from North Division leader Harvard. The Big Green and the Crimson will meet next weekend to decide the North Division.
In the first game the Big Green looked to get things started early with three straight singles to lead the first inning off but Chin struck out the final batter to keep Dartmouth off the board.
Brown struck first in the bottom of the second off a single before an error brought the runner home. The Big Green responded in the top of the third after Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) reached on a Brown error and then moved to second on a Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt. With her second single up the middle, Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) plated the tying run.
Dartmouth's defense came up big in a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the third when pitcher Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) earned a strikeout for the final out of the frame, preserving the 1-1 tie.
The Big Green continued to threaten to break the game wide open as a single by Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) followed by two errors loaded the bases in the top of the fourth. Ramirez broke the tie, scoring on another Brown error. A third miscue by the home team allowed Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) to tally another run as Dartmouth found itself up, 3-1. Costello doubled to center field, bringing Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) home giving the Big Green its four runs in the game.
The Bears got a run back off a Dartmouth error in the bottom of the sixth but a double play ended the inning for Brown. A two-out single for the Bears in the bottom of the seventh had the home team poised for a comeback as Brown found itself down by just a run. But Barker held on and struck out the final batter for the last out and the win.
Hubert went 2-for-4 while Ramirez was a stellar 3-for-3. Barker earned the win for the Big Green, going the full seven innings. She struck out seven with just two earned runs.
In the nightcap it was the Bears that again recorded the first run, breaking a three-inning scoreless tie. Chin got the loss in the first game but in the nightcap she held Dartmouth scoreless through the first six innings before Clarkson became the Big Green's hero with a home run to right field, tying the contest at 1-1.
But it was the junior pitcher from Brown that salvaged the victory for the home team with her own homer in the bottom of the seventh, getting the 2-1 victory.
Hubert and Clarkson were both 2-for-3. In the circle Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) went the complete game, striking out three.
Dartmouth will travel to Harvard on Saturday before coming home to Sachem Field on Sunday for another two games against the Crimson. First pitch on both days is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
