Dartmouth field hockey captain Virginia
Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) will serve as a link between Big
Green athletics and the Upper Valley community as the Jaeger Civic
Intern for the upcoming academic year.
The internship is named
in honor of former Director of Athletics Richard G, Jaeger and promotes
and facilitates local community service by Dartmouth student-athletes.
The Jaeger Intern serves as a coordinator for matching community service
by Dartmouth Athletic teams or groups to community needs and
opportunities.
A cooperative venture between the Department of
Athletics and the Tucker Foundation, the internship is located within
the Department of Athletics, where primary supervision occurs, but a
close working relationship with the staff of the Tucker Foundation is an
essential component of the intern's planning, training and project
management. On-campus recruitment, community needs assessment, and
evaluations are all areas of work and learning challenge for this
internship. Peisch will also be responsible for writing a blog every two
weeks, so interested parties can view the work that is going on with
the internship.
“We chose Virginia for several reasons, among
them are her past experience and her strong ability to articulate them,”
said Anne Hudak, an Assistant Athletic Director for Student
Enhancement. “We believe Virginia will do a great job reaching out to
the athletes and helping connect them with opportunities in the
community. “She is driven and focused, two qualities we need in the
Jaeger Intern. There are no set office hours for the intern, so we
needed to be sure to hire someone who can not only work independently,
but be resourceful as well. Having been a captain on her team for the
past year, Virginia has gained valuable skills we believe will help her
with the internship.”
Peisch has been a well-known face around
athletics and especially at Chase AstroTurf Field. She is a two-time
first team All-Ivy selection and was selected as a first team
All-Northeast Region representative as well. Two seasons ago, she was a
unanimous first team All-Ivy selection after breaking the school record
with 16 and this past season, she almost tied her own mark with 15
helpers in 2009. She was a captain for the Big Green as a junior and
helped the team to its first winning season since 2005 with a 9-8 mark.
“We
are fortunate to have so many individuals at Dartmouth who embody the
term 'student-athlete,'” said Senior Associate Athletic Director Drew
Galbraith. “Virginia is a shining example with her academic and athletic
accomplishments, as well as her committment to community service.
Virginia's passion for engagement in the Upper Valley is truly
remarkable.”
Peisch replaces senior men's tennis player Jeff
Friedman (Westport, Conn.), who held the position for two years.
“Jeff established a new standard for Jaeger Interns over the past two
years and we fully expect Virginia to build upon that foundation,” said
Galbraith.
