HANOVER, N.H. - Sophomore defender Teo Larsson-Sax scored both goals including the sudden victory winner to give the Dartmouth men's soccer team a 2-1 double overtime win over San Diego tonight.
The game was part of the annual Dartmouth Classic Tournament.Dartmouth (2-0) controlled the entire first overtime period and after an early possession for San Diego (1-2) in the second, seized the ball for a dangerous sequence. San Diego's Charles Blasé put a free kick on goal but sophomore Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) saved it. The ensuing Dartmouth possession led to back-to-back corner kicks taken by senior Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.). After the second corner there was a scramble in the box that led to Larsson-Sax getting a head on the ball and planting it in the back of the net for the overtime win in the 103rd minute.
It was a spirited and physical battle for the entire 103 minutes with four yellow cards and 24 fouls whistled. But there was plenty of action in the boxes as well, with Dartmouth holding a 17-7 advantage in shots.
San Diego had control early in the game and took the upperhand with a goal in just the fifth minute of play. Stephen Posa sent the ball up to Patrick Wallen who fired from dead center just outside the box, beating a diving Donovan to put the Toreros up 1-0 early.
Dartmouth continued to work hard to get an equalizer and it came in the 18th minute when Larsson-Sax connected on a beautiful header in the box off a cross from Olsen to tie the game at 1-1. The Big Green nearly got another one six minutes later on a counterattack after a San Diego free kick. Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) brought the ball out, beating three defenders and played it to Olsen who passed off to Austin Bowers (Greenwich, Conn.) who went for the top right corner but just missed.
San Diego had some dangerous opportunities with a multitude of free kicks in outside Dartmouth's box but the Big Green's defense cleared them each time. Dartmouth had a great look in the 40th minute when rookie Colin Skelly (Wrightstown, Pa.) forced USD keeper Michael D'Arrigo into a save off a header. Mkosana dinged one off the post just before halftime and the teams entered the locker room tied at 1-1.
The second half started with a lot of back and forth play but no real dangerous threats on either side until the 60th minute when Donnie Surdoval (Sparta, N.J.) sent a header just wide after a corner kick by Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Twp., Mich.). Dzierzawski nearly made another play in the 65th minute with a nice ball in off a free kick but it was punched out by D'Arrigo.
San Diego's best opportunity of the second half came in the 80th minute when Sergio Lopez played the ball into the box and fired with Donovan off his line, but the shot went just wide. Mkosana fired for Dartmouth in the 87th at a wide angle by D'Arrigo corralled the ball.
Dartmouth had all the opportunities in the first overtime period including two corner kicks - one that resulted in a wide header by Bryan Giudicelli (Emerald Hills, Calif.). The Toreros appeared content to lock down defensively in overtime and it paid off after a scoreless 100 minutes. The second overtime would prove to be a different story, leading to Larsson-Sax's game-winner for his first collegiate multi-goal game.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Stony Brook at 2:00 p.m. The Seawolves lost to Holy Cross, 3-0, in the first game of the Dartmouth Classic. Holy Cross plays San Diego at 11:30 a.m
