DURHAM, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team saw its seven-game win streak snapped on Friday night at Lundholm Gymnasium. The Big Green dropped a tight 3-2 match to in-state rival, New Hampshire on Day One of UNH's Holly Young Invitational.
All five sets were extremely close as three of the five had the winning team victorious by just two points. Game scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 24-26, 9-15.
The first set started off point-for-point as neither team was able to get up by more then just a few points early on. Midway through the set the Big Green reeled off four straight to take its biggest lead of the contest but the Wildcats roared backand tied the set again, forcing Dartmouth to call a timeout. The Big Green pulled ahead and stayed that way for the rest of the set, winning, 25-22.
Dartmouth took the early lead in Set Two but UNH rallied and captured its first lead of the match. The Wildcats continued to lead by at least one point throughout the early goings in the set but a kill by Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) gave the Big Green the lead backat 13-12. Dartmouth carried the lead into the later points of the set but the home team rallied and took six of the last nine points to win 26-24 and tie the match.
In the third set the Big Green took off quickly but like the first two contests, the Wildcats came right back to tie and take the lead. Three points with Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) serving allowed Dartmouth to take its second lead of the game midway through the set. The Big Green held on and took a 25-23 win to take the lead in the match.
The fourth set started out as all UNH as the the Wildcats went up quicky and held an 8-3 advantage before Dartmouth called a timeout. Kills by Meghan Cooney (Martinez, Calif.) and Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) along with a service ace by Houston helped the Big Green come from a six-point deficit to find itself down by three as UNH took a timeout. The two sides continued to trade the lead throughout the final points of the set before the Wildcats were able to capitalize on a Big Green error and take a 26-24 win to tie the match at two sets apiece.
The fifth and final set had UNH going up quickly by five but kills by Villanueva and Baird brought Dartmouth back to within one as the Wildcats called a timeout. Despite rallying back, the Big Green could do no more as New Hampshire came away the victor, 15-9.
Baird was tops for Dartmouth, tying a game-high with 21 kills. Houston finished with 38 assists while Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) was tops with a game-high 24 digs. The Wildcats outblocked the Big Green 18-9 with Justine Elliott recording six for the home team.
The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday at UNH with a 10 a.m. match against Rutgers before squaring off against Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m.
