HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team tallied four goals on 36 shots as the Big Green evened its Ivy League record at 1-1 with a 4-2 defeat of Brown (1-5, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon in Hanover. Dartmouth is now 5-1 on the season, its best record since 2000.
Junior Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) was the story of the game as she recorded her second hat trick of the season. All of Hood's goals came off penalty corners as the Big Green had 13 to Brown's five.
Hood had two goals in the first half with the last score of the game going to her as well. All three of her goals had assists going to Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) who pushed the ball out with Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) there to stop it for Hood to shoot.
The three Big Green players combined for the first goal of the contest just 7:10 into the game. Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) had the second goal at 21:17 with Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) getting the assist as Dartmouth went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Brown got back into the game quickly with a goal by Tacy Zysk early in the second frame as the senior took a rebound off a shot from Katie Hyland to put it past goalie Meghan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.).
Hood gave Dartmouth a two-goal lead again at 40:47 before Abigail Taft was able to make a great play and score Brown's second goal to keep the Bears alive. Three penalty corners for the Big Green late in the game allowed Hood to tally her third as Dartmouth controlled play at the end of regulation, taking the win.
The Big Green had 36 shots in the game to the Bears' 10 as Vakiener finished with one save and netminder Lauren Kessler had eight for Brown.
Dartmouth will be back in action at home tomorrow, taking on Holy Cross at Chase Field at 2:00 pm.
