HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team is now 6-1 on the season as the Big Green recorded a shutout on Sunday with a 5-0 defeat of Holy Cross at Chase Field. The shutout is the first for Dartmouth this season and the third career shutout for goalie Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J).
Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) continued to add to her points total on the weekend as the junior had two goals and two assists against the Crusaders. She recorded five goals and two assists in the Big Green's last two contests.
Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) got the home team on the board first just 2:47 in, when she received a pass from Hood directly in front of the goal, shooting into the left side of the net for the score. Hood connected with Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.) late in the first half as Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead into the break.
The Big Green put tremendous pressure on Holy Cross netminder, Kelly Sotsky through the first 35 minutes as Dartmouth led 21-3 in shots.
The second half started out with the two teams struggling to maintain possession and get any good looks at the goal. Maggie Scanlon (Shaker Heights, Ohio) was able to break through for the Big Green with her first collegiate strike, 42:52 into the contest. That goal opened the gates for Dartmouth as Hood potted the next two off assists from Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) then Allison Weinstock (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany).
Dartmouth finished with 33 total shots to Holy Cross' four. The Big Green also had three more corners then the Crusaders, at 8-5. Vakiener finished with four saves while Sotsky had 13.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend with another pair of home contests. On Saturday, Oct. 2 the Big Green will square off with Penn at 12:00 pm in an Ivy League matchup then on Sunday, Oct. 3 against Maine at 2:00 pm.
