HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team improved to 7-1 overall and more importantly, 2-1 in the Ivy League with a 7-1 victory over the visiting Penn Quakers (1-7, 0-3 Ivy) on Saturday at Chase Field. The win is the Big Green's 300th since the program began in 1972.
Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) paced Dartmouth with her third hat trick of the season while Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) tallied four assists.
The first two goals of the day for the Big Green were typical corner shots for the home team. Peisch pushed in with Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) there to stop. Hood took the ball from McHenry and did the same drag flick on both corners, putting the ball in the back of the net to give Dartmouth a 2-0 lead early in the contest.
Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) teamed up with freshman Olivia Quaglia (Los Altos, Calif.) for the third Big Green score with 10:51 on the clock.
Penn got one back when Kristin Snyder capitalized on one of the few errors Dartmouth had in the game. Snyder scooped up a turnover and began a foot race with Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.), putting the ball past a hard charging Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.).
The Big Green took the 3-1 lead into the break. The home team also led in the other categories on the board, 8-4 in shots and 4-1 in penalty corners.
Quickly into the second half McHenry got a hard working goal for her fifth of the season and the fourth in the game. Peisch began the play, passing over to McHenry who was waiting at the left side of the net putting the ball in behind the goalie.
Less than four minutes later Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.) put another up for the Big Green. McPherson received the pass from Peisch in front of the net as the sophomore just had to turn around and put the ball in for her fifth of the year.
Hood and Quaglia tallied the sixth and seventh goals off a rebound and a turnover.
Dartmouth finished with a total of 23 shots to Penn's seven while getting seven corners to the Quakers three.
The Big Green continues at home tomorrow with a regional matchup against Maine. Game time at Chase Field is slated for 2:00 pm.
