HANOVER, N.H. – In what shaped up to be one of the best tests the Dartmouth field hockey team has faced this season, the Big Green (7-2) dropped a 6-1 contest to the visiting Maine Black Bears (8-3) on Sunday at Chase Field. Maine junior Kelly Newton single-handidly won the game for the Black Bears as she tallied four goals and one assist. Despite the score, Dartmouth was in the game for the full 70 minutes as the Big Green finished with just one less shot then Maine at 19-20 and had five corner attempts to the Black Bear's 10.
Maine scored its first goal off its third corner attempt early in the contest. Newton potted the first of her three goals in the half on that corner and then scored again just a few minutes later, capitalizing on a Big Green turnover. Newton recorded the third goal of the frame after getting the ball at midfield, coming in alone on the goal and shooting past Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, NJ) into the right side of the net.
A pair of seniors teamed up for the Big Green goal as Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) brought the ball down most of the length of the field, passing over to Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) at the last second. McHenry was able to catch the Maine goalie off guard to put the ball into the back of the net.
The Black Bears led in every category at the break with 12 shots to Dartmouth's nine and had nine corner attempts to the Big Green's three.
Brittney Cummings gave Maine a three-goal lead into the second before Newton came up big again with a huge goal that slammed into the back of the net.
Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.) had two great shots on net late in the frame as she tried to get her team back into the game but was just unable to get the ball into the back of the net.
Cummings gave the Black Bears another score with under 5:00 to play in the game as the Maine defense continued to hold Dartmouth off the board enroute to taking the win.
The Big Green has a pair of road games next week, traveling to UNH on Oct. 6 and then Boston University on Oct. 10.
