SOUTH KENT, Conn. — Trailing the University of Connecticut by one stroke after one round, the Dartmouth men's golf team vaulted ahead of the Huskies in what turned out to be the final round as weather shortened the Hartford Hawk Invitational to 36 holes. Unfortunately for the Big Green, St. John's put together the low score in the second round tournament to finish first at Bull's Bridge Golf Course on Tuesday, leaving Dartmouth in second place.
The Big Green followed up their three-over 291 with a solid 10-over 298 in the second round, while UConn posted a 303 (+15) to fall four strokes behind Dartmouth. But there was St. John's equaling the Green's first round score of 291 (+3) after shooting a 294 (+6) in the opening round for a two-round total of 585, four strokes ahead of Dartmouth.
Junior Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) entered the second round in a tie for first at one-under par, then carded a 72 (E) to finish with a 143 (-1). Medalist honors, however, went to D.J. Lantz of the host Hawks, who was one-under par each round to best Williamson by a single stroke. No one played the par-four holes on the course in better fashion than Williamson at two-under, and the junior also sank eight birdies in the tournament.
Williamson wasn't the only Big Green golfer shining through the rain on the course as sophomore James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) tied for fourth place with a 145 (+1) after shooting even par in the second round. Pleat had seven birdies in his two rounds and was as strong as anyone on the par-fives, playing them at two-under. Neither Williamson nor Pleat had anything worse than a bogey in the 36 holes.
Also among the top 20 in the field of 85 golfers was sophomore Owen Lynch (Rumford, R.I.), who with his six birdies finished in a tie for 15th with 74-76—150 (+6).
Dartmouth will be back on the links this weekend at the MacDonald Cup hosted by Yale.
