AMHERST, Mass. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team ran into a hot goalkeeper at UMass today, taking a 1-1 double-overtime tie largely due to Chris Piekos' 12 saves in goal.
The Big Green (4-2-1) had many chances to win the game - outshooting UMass, 22-13 including putting 13 of its attempts on goal. Dartmouth also took 12 corner kicks to UMass' four.
Piekos helped the Minutemen (1-3-4) to their fourth tie of the season by making 12 saves including nine in the second half and two in overtime.
The first half was offensively quiet, with the teams combining for just five shots, but would prove to be the only fruitful period of the match. UMass struck first, scoring a goal in the 27th minute when Tyler Cleverdon converted to the left corner off assists from Chris Roswess and David Key.
Dartmouth answered right back less than two minutes later with the game-tying goal in the 29th minute. Junior Lucky Mkosana (Bulwayo, Zimbabwe) sent a cross into the box for senior Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) who scored to the right corner.
The second half was nothing like the first with the teams combining for 24 shots, Dartmouth holding the 14-10 advantage. That was when Piekos shined with nine of his 12 stops. Dartmouth sophomore goalkeeper Sean Donovan(Burr Ridge, Ill.) was solid in his own right, with three saves all in the second half.
Dartmouth had a big scoring opportunity in the 52nd minute, however, when a UMass foul in the box led to a penalty kick. Senior Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) stepped up to take the shot but fittingly, Piekos made a diving save to his right to preserve the tie.
Neither team could break through in overtime, though Dartmouth held a 5-1 shot advantage across the two 10-minute periods.
This marked the third overtime game of the season for Dartmouth. The Big Green opens its Ivy League campaign at Princeton this Saturday with a 6 p.m. start.
