HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team took its season opener over Fairfield on Friday afternoon. The Big Green scored in the first and second frames to grab the win in Dartmouth's own Big Green Classic.
Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) and Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) combined for the first Dartmouth goal, 6:47 into the first period. Byrne pushed the ball to Everett who pulled goalie Maddy Sposito out of position and put the ball behind the netminder for the first tally of the season.
Hillary Fitts and Christy Starsinic tied the game with 12:43 left in the first when goalie Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) was unable to stop the shot coming at her. The goal was the first for the Stags this season.
Late in the game, Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) and Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) connected on the go-ahead goal. Masini passed quickly to Herm in front of the cage. Herm faked Sposito to the left, putting the ball into the right side of the net for her first goal of the season.
Dartmouth led in all categories on the day with 27 shots to the Stags 11, Dartmouth recorded 10 corners to Fairfield's six. Vakiener had four saves while Sposito finished with nine.
