Complete Game Notes
Armed for a Season Sweep
• Dartmouth may have lost its final game of 2010, 74-57 at Bucknell, but has an opportunity to start off 2011 with a season sweep of Army having defeated the Black Knights three weeks ago, 71-68.
• Against Patriot League schools this year, the Big Green are 2-1 with victories against Army and Colgate and the loss to Bucknell.
• Not only was Dartmouth playing without the services of senior point guard Ronnie Dixon (out with a broken hand), it lost junior wing David Rufful for the second half after a gash opened above his left eye, necessitating four stitches. He is expected to play, however, against Army.
• The Big Green's most effective player over the past four games has been junior Kirk Crecco, who has averaged 12.0 points and 4.8 rebounds (both team highs) while shooting 47.1 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent (14-of-16) at the foul line.
• Each of Dartmouth's top five scorers is no taller than 6-4 with junior Jabari Trotter (6-1) leading the way at 9.5 ppg and Rufful (6-4) right behind at 9.0 ppg.
• Free throw shooting has been markedly improved with the Green knocking down 72.9 percent thus far, compared to just 65.6 percent last year.
Series vs. Army
• The Big Green's 71-68 victory on Dec. 11 evened the series between the two programs at 17 apiece.
• Dartmouth has lost the last two games at Christl Arena, but pulled off its only win at West Point in the last 55 years five seasons ago, 55-42.
• Three weeks ago, the Green got a career-high 21 points from senior Ronnie Dixon and 14 more from David Rufful, and rallied from a 12-point, second-half deficit to pull out the win. But Dixon will not be able to perform an encore due to his broken hand.
• It has been nearly 83 years since the first game between the two institutions, a 26-18 Big Green victory at West Point on Dec. 22, 1926.
Scouting the Black Knights
• Army just completed a seven-game road trip with a 68-61 loss at Fairfield on New Year's Eve, but had won its previous two contests with victories at Brown by two and at UT-Pan American, 66-58.
• Four Black Knights scored in double figures against the Stags, including the team's top two scorers — Jeremy Hence with 14 (15.4 ppg) and Julian Simmons with 13 off the bench (16.4 ppg).
• Army is 1-3 against Ivy League opponents this season with its win at Brown, but losing at Dartmouth, at Yale by an 87-79 margin and versus Penn in New Jersey, 68-52.
• Ellis is the third of three Black Knights averaging double figures at 13.4 points, and his 5.4 rebounding average is second only to Hence at 5.9.
• Both Simmons and Hence are shooting at least 44 percent from three-point range while Army is at 41.1 percent as a team, which ranks among the top 15 in the country.
• The Black Knights are coached by former Cornell assistant Zach Spiker, who is in his second year and sports a 21-22 overall record. The 14-15 record in his first year gave Army more wins than it had posted in 22 of the previous 23 seasons.
Arrested for Treason by the Patriots
Dartmouth had enjoyed its recent meetings with Patriot League teams, dating back to its 49-43 win over Bucknell last year. Earlier this season, the Big Green handled Colgate, 80-63, and then knocked off Army on Dec. 11, 71-68, before the Bison ended the modest three-game streak in Lewisburg on Dec. 30, 74-57.
On the Ball
While the Big Green did not shoot the ball well at Bucknell on Dec. 30 (34.5 percent), they held onto the ball well, committing a season-low nine turnovers. On the flip side, Dartmouth also picked up 10 steals, the most for the team in over a year when it had 11 against Lyndon State.
Iowa State of Mind
With the passing of Bob Feller in December, it was only fitting that Dartmouth got its first win in Feller's home state of Iowa since the Cleveland Indians were the reigning World Champions. Back on Dec. 30, 1948, the Big Green beat Vanderbilt in the Corn Bowl. Nearly 62 years later, Dartmouth got that second win in Iowa, defeating Drake, 67-59. The victory was also the first for the Green against a team from the state.
Ivy League RPI
Some high-profile wins by conference teams and solid play before the start of league play have helped the Ivy League to a current conference RPI of 13. That is the highest the league has ever finished in the rankings, accomplished in the 2001-02 season (first tracked in the 1993-94 season).
Crecco Cramming the Iron
In his first two years at Dartmouth, junior Kirk Crecco averaged 6.4 minutes over 41 games, scoring a total of 46 points. It took him seven games to equal his scoring total, and he has been much more efficient in his scoring as well. Now with 75 points in 10 games, Crecco has hit half of his shots and scored in double figures in three of the last four games.
