Complete Game Notes
100 Ivy Games for Cormier
• It took nearly 19 years to reach the milestone, but Dartmouth head coach Paul Cormier is guiding the Big Green for the 100th time in an Ivy League contest with today's game at Harvard. The first 98 came during Cormier's initial stint in Hanover from 1984-91.
• Not only are the Green are attempting to end a four-game slide, but also a six-game skid against Ivy teams and a nine-game drought on the road in league games.
• Last time on the court, Dartmouth, nearly overcame a 15-point deficit at Colgate, only to come up three points short in a 67-64 defeat on Monday.
• The Big Green got a balanced scoring attack against the Raiders with junior Jabari Trotter leading four players in double figures with 14 points, 12 coming on four three-pointers.
• Two of those top scorers were freshmen Tyler Melville (career-high 12 points) and Gediminas Bertasius (10), while sophomore R.J. Griffin pitched in 13.
• No Dartmouth team has shot better than 71.5 percent from the free throw line in over 20 years, but the current Green squad is at 71.9 percent.
Series vs. Harvard
• Although Dartmouth has lost four straight against the Crimson, including a 68-53 loss in Leede Arena two weeks ago, the Big Green still own a 94-77 record in the series.
• Both teams had a player score 16 points — David Rufful for Dartmouth and Keith Wright for Harvard — but the Crimson shot over 53 percent and dominated the glass, 32-22, to earn the road win.
• At Lavietes Pavilion, the Big Green have an 11-17 mark against Harvard, with their last win coming two years ago in overtime, 75-66.
• Paul Cormier is 12-6 against the Crimson during his head coaching career — 9-6 at Dartmouth and 3-0 at Fairfield.
Scouting the Crimson
• Harvard owns the longest current winning streak in the Ivy League at five and has a perfect 7-0 mark at home this season.
• All three of the Crimson's losses have come on the road against opponents in the top 80 of the RPI, and two in the top 40.
• The marquee win for Harvard came against Boston College, 78-69, as five scored in double figures. Freshman reserve guard Laurent Rivard led the way with 23 points, who was recently named the Ivy Rookie of the Week for the third time.
• Forward Keith Wright is the team's leading scorer (14.5) and rebounder (8.4), ranking fifth and second in the league, respectively, while shooting 58.3 percent from the floor (15th nationally).
• The Green should be wary of sending Harvard to the foul line — the Crimson are second in the nation in free throw shooting at 80.5 percent with both Rivard and Oliver McNally among the top 10.
• Brandyn Curry runs the offense and among the top 25 in the country at 5.7 assists per game, plus is tied with McNally for the most steals on the team with 19.
• Kyle Casey is rounding into shape after missing the first nine games, posting a double-double against George Washington with 15 rebounds.
Fantastic Free Throws
If there is one thing Dartmouth is good at this season, it's free throw shooting. At Colgate on Jan. 17, the Big Green converted 19-of-22 attempts (.864), boosting their season rate to 73.3 percent, which ranks among the top 50 nationally. Oddly enough, the team's best day at the line this year also came against Colgate back in November at 87.5 percent (21-of-24).
Brother Can You Spare a Dime?
Freshman Tyler Melville did give out two assists against his older brother's team, Colgate, on Jan. 17, but his season-high 12 points were a bit more noteworthy. His brother Sterling, meanwhile, started and played 13 minutes, providing six points and two rebounds (but no assists) to the Raider cause. Tyler may have won the battle of brothers, but Sterling won the war as Colgate held off the Big Green, 67-64.
Speaking of Dimes …
In each of the last two games, Dartmouth forward/center Clive Weeden has led the team in assists, dishing out three against Harvard on Jan. 8 and four more at Colgate, tying a career best. Only his fellow co-captain, Ronnie Dixon, has led the team more often in that category with eight to Weeden's three.
Ivy League RPI
Some high-profile wins by conference teams and solid play before the start of league play have helped the Ivy League to a current conference RPI of 14. That is the highest the league has enjoyed since its high-water mark of 13 at the end of the 2001-02 season (first tracked in 1993-94). Only one league team has a non-conference game remaining, that being Penn against St. Joseph's today. A Quaker win would give the league a .500 mark at 54-54 against Division I non-conference teams for the first time since that 2001-02 campaign.
