NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Dartmouth women's track and field team competed at Columbia on Saturday against Columbia and Yale. The Big Green finished third in their first Ivy competition of the season. Columbia took the first with 77 points, Yale placed second with 65 and Dartmouth finished third with 38.
The Big Green did the most damage in the throwing events. In the shot put, the team took the top two spots. Freshman Corinne Kominkiewicz (East Brunswick, N.J.) won the event with a throw of 12.97m. Senior Christina Alexander (Austin, Texas) placed second with a throw of 12.58m. Alexander also placed third in the weight throw at 14.94m.
The other victory for Dartmouth came in the 4x800 relay. The quartet of junior Alexi Pappas (Alameda, Calif.), junior Amy Schuman (Lee, N.H.), freshman Monica Adler (Manchester, Mass.) and freshman Arianna Vailas (Manchester, N.H.) bested the second-place team from Columbia by a full second.
The Big Green had multiple other athletes finish second in their respective events. Senior Alexandra Tanner (Baltimore, Md.) crossed the finish line in the 400m dash at 56.14 to place second. In the 800m run, Adler placed second at 2:12.52. Sophomore Cara Vernacchia (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) finished with a jump of 5.72m to place second in the long jump. Junior Malina Simmers (Anchorage, Alaska) came in second in the triple jump at 11.52m.
Dartmouth return to action next weekend, Jan. 27-29, when they compete at the Multi-Event Meet and the Terrier Classic.
