Complete Game Notes
Taking on Host UAA
• Dartmouth's first game ever in the state of Alaska turned out to be a near-miss as San Francisco barely held on to beat the Big Green, 71-69.
• The Big Green cut a seven-point deficit with a minute to play down to one and had a chance to tie or take the lead, but they could not come up with a fourth consecutive three-pointer.
• Five of Dartmouth's season-high 10 three-pointers came from senior David Rufful, who scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Green.
• Junior R.J. Griffin added 17 points, his third game in double figures thus far this year, while freshman Gabas Maldunas chipped in 14 more.
• Second-year assistant coach Ricky Moore is returning to the Great Alaska Shootout for the first time since playing in the tournament in 1995 for Connecticut, which finished third.
• The last regular-season tournament Dartmouth won was the Poinsettia Holiday Classic hosted by Furman eight years ago.
• Freshman forward Gabas Maldunas was named the Ivy League's co-Rookie of the Week last week for his performances against Vermont and Bryant. After logging nine points and seven rebounds in a loss to the Catamounts, he posted his first career double-double in the victory with 15 points and 10 boards.
Series vs. Alaska Anchorage
• This is the first game between the two schools.
• The Seawolves are just one of seven opponents this season that Dartmouth has never played. The other ones for certain are: Bryant, Elon, Indiana-Purdue Ft. Wayne, Longwood and San Francisco. The Big Green will also play one other opponent in Alaska for the first time, either Central Michigan or UC Irvine, depending on the outcomes today.
Scouting the Seawolves
• Alaska Anchorage, a Division II school, opened its season on Wednesday when it hosted Murray State in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout, falling by just two, 64-62.
• Last year the Seawolves went 24-10 overall and 13-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference to finish in second place.
• UAA earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 15th time in its 34th year, bowing out in the second round.
• UAA has won at least one game in the Great Alaska Shootout in eight of the last nine years.
• In the season-opening loss to Murray State, forward Taylor Rohde, who transferred from Arizona State, led the Seawolves with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting and six rebounds, while point guard Steve White added 14 points and five assists.
• Travis Thompson is the sharp-shooter off the bench; last year as a freshman he shot 51.6 percent overall and 44.0 percent from downtown while averaging 5.9 points a game.
• The Seawolves are coached by Rusty Osborne, now in his 21st season at the university and eighth as the head coach. He enters today's game with a record of 134-78 and has taken UAA to the NCAA Tournament four times, including the Division II Final Four in 2008.
Three-Point Thrill
Dartmouth knocked down 10 three-pointers in 23 attempts (.435) in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout on Wednesday evening against San Francisco, just the 10th time in the past eight seasons the Big Green have hit that many in a game. Even with those threes, however, the Big Green lost by two points, 71-69, and have gone just 3-7 in those games with double-digit threes.
Rufful Rips the Nets
Senior David Rufful began the season by scoring a total of 12 points in the first three contests, but broke out for a career-high 19 points against San Francisco on Nov. 23 in Alaska. Of those 19 points, 15 came thanks to his five three-pointers, also a career-best. Efficiency ruled his night as he needed just 10 shots to accumlate his 19 points.
Lending a Helping Hand
Of the Big Green's 23 field goals against San Francisco, a teammate assisted on 19 of them, the most for the team since giving out that same amount against Plymouth State nearly three years ago. Senior Jabari Trotter gave out seven of those helpers, a career high.
Still Looking for a Streak
With the loss to San Francisco, Dartmouth was denied its first winning streak since the 2008-09 season. The Big Green won back-to-back games at Penn and Princeton on Feb. 20-21, 2009 — the only time they have defeated both schools on the road in one weekend — but have yet to string together two wins since.
R.J. = Righteous Jumpers
Against Bryant on Nov. 29, junior R.J. Griffin buried seven three-pointers in just 11 attempts as he tallied a career-high 29 points to help Dartmouth to its first win of the season, 66-62. The seven triples were just two shy of the school record, and he scored more points than any Big Green player since Alex Barnett '09 ripped the nets for 30 in an overtime win at Harvard on Jan. 24, 2009. He followed that performance up with 17 points against San Francisco with three more triples, two of which he banked in off the glass.
