Regrouping the Ranks
• The three-game trip in New York did not start well for Dartmouth, losing a 61-55 game in overtime at Colgate on Monday.
• The Big Green, which never trailed in the second half, held a three-point lead with 6.3 seconds to play, but Colgate hit 3-of-4 free throws in that span to tie the game and force overtime.
• The loss kept Dartmouth from recording consecutive victories for the first time since historical wins at Penn and Princeton in February of 2009.
• Freshman Jvonte Brooks recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. No Big Green player has gathered more caroms in a game this year.
• Dartmouth shot a season-low 27.1 percent (16-of-59) against the Raiders.
• Nobody on Dartmouth's roster currently is averaging 10 points a game; junior R.J. Griffin just fell under the mark to 9.9 and leads the team despite not scoring in double figures in any of the past six games.
• Freshman John Golden was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday after averaging 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in two games last week, including his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the 62-54 win over Elon.
Series vs. Army
• Dartmouth is attempting to even the all-time series with the Black Knights, which have an 18-17 advantage in the 35 meetings that date back to 1926, including a 10-7 record in West Point.
• Last year the two played at each team's venue with the home team defending its own court. The Big Green knocked off Army in Hanover, 71-68, but the Black Knights avenged their loss with a 67-47 triumph in West Point.
• Dartmouth has played Army in each of the past six seasons but has lost five of the eight contests.
• The last Big Green triumph at Army's home floor came nearly six years ago on Jan. 4, 2006, as Dartmouth took a 55-42 contest.
Scouting the Black Knights
• Despite outscoring its opposition on the season, Army sports a 4-7 record. One big reason for the incongruous facts is a 95-40 victory over Marywood on Nov. 16.
• The Black Knights also have wins over Binghamton, Texas-Pan American and a mutual Dartmouth opponent, Bryant. Both teams beat the Bulldogs by four points.
• Guard Ella Ellis is the undisputed leader for Army, averaging 16.9 points a game while shooting 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from three-point range. None of his teammates score more than 9.4 points per game.
• The Black Knights are among the top 50 teams nationally in three-pointers made per game (8.0). Joining Ellis as long-range threats are Josh Herbeck (26-of-68, .382) and Julian Simmons (18-of-51, .353).
• Maxwell Lenox leads Army on the boards at 5.1 per game while Jordan Springer grabs 4.7 rpg. As a team, the Black Knights has been outrebounded by 1.7 per game.
• Army is coached by third-year coach Zach Spiker, who is 29-41 entering this game. He is a 2000 graduate of Ithaca College and spent five years as an assistant at Cornell, helping the program on its way to three straight Ivy titles, leaving before the last one that landed the Big Red in the Sweet 16.
Dartmouth, Cormier vs. Patriot
Dartmouth has played nearly 200 games against teams currently in the Patriot League with an overall record of 74-123. Nearly half (97) of those meetings have come against Holy Cross. Head coach Paul Cormier is 10-12 against Patriot teams and 2-3 versus Army.
Off in Overtime
With the 61-55 loss at Colgate, the Big Green have now dropped three straight games that went into overtime, each of which came on the road. Yale beat Dartmouth in New Haven last year, and Cornell needed double overtime to knock off the Green in Ithaca on Valentine's Day in 2009. Three weeks before the loss to the Big Red, Dartmouth knocked off Harvard in Cambridge thanks to an extra five minutes, the last overtime road win.
Brooks Goes 12 by 12
Freshman Jvonte Brooks recorded the fifth double-double of the season for the Green when he led Dartmouth with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the overtime loss at Colgate. But as it turned out, it was the first time the Big Green lost a game this year when a double-double was recorded.
Foul Fest
Not only did Dartmouth commit a season-high 29 fouls at Colgate (only five of which came in the first half), the Big Green had four players foul out of the game. The last time Dartmouth was whistled for as many fouls came more than three years ago when the Green were called for 33 in a 100-82 loss at Providence on Nov. 18, 2008.
Another Top Rookie
With Gabas Maldunas and Brooks already with three Ivy Rookie of the Week honors between them, freshman John Golden figured he would join the fray, earning the award on Dec. 19 for his play against IPFW and Elon. After tallying 11 points and grabbing five rebounds in a late loss to the Mastodons, Golden posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to help the Green knock off the Phoenix, 62-54.
