HANOVER, N.H. - The nationally-ranked Dartmouth men's hockey team took a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Thompson Arena on Saturday night. Alex Goodship (Blackfalds, Alta.) began the night with a short-handed goal before Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) tipped in a power-play strike and Paul Lee (Garden City, N.Y.) scored an insurance empty netter for the Big Green.
The win improves No. 17 Dartmouth to 14-7-3 overall and 10-5-2 in ECAC Hockey action while Quinnipiac drops to 13-12-5 overall and 6-8-4 in ECAC Hockey play.
The first score of the game was a shorthanded strike by Goodship, the first of his career. With five seconds left in a Bobcats penalty, Goodship stripped the puck at QU's blueline and skated in alone on netminder Eric Hartzell. Hartzell stood tall against Goodship but put his legs together just a little too late as the shot slipped through.
The Big Green scored another in the second with a power-play strike late in the frame. Working the puck around, Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and defensive linemate Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) passed back and forth between the circles before Stejskal put a hard shot on Hartzell. Walsh was able to get his stick down and tip the puck past the netminder to give the Big Green a 2-0 lead.
Quinnipiac got one back late in the game as the Bobcats had all sorts of momentum in the waning minutes of the third period. Connor Jones scored with just over five minutes to play. The power-play goal, which cut Dartmouth's lead in half broke up junior goalie James Mello's (Rehoboth, Mass.) shutout.
The empty-netter by Lee with 1:04 left in the game gave the Big Green a little insurance as the Bobcats ended the contest with two men in the box to give the Big Green a 5-on-3 advantage.
Mello finished with 21 saves and Hartzell had 25.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m., taking on Princeton in Thompson Arena.
