PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Although Dartmouth placed four players in double figures and senior
Clive Weeden recorded a double-double, the Brown Bears rode the emotion of Senior Night to a 100-76 triumph on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Adrian Williams scored 26 points on the strength of seven three-pointers in his final home game to lead Brown (11-15, 4-8 Ivy) to the victory.
Dartmouth (5-21, 1-11 Ivy) got 19 points from sophomore
R.J. Griffin, and Weeden provided 11 points, 12 rebounds and a career-best four blocks, but they could not stave off the Big Green's ninth straight defeat. Joining the duo in double figures were freshman
Tyler Melville with 13 points and junior
Jabari Trotter with 12 as the Big Green sank a season-high 11 three-pointers.
The Bears enjoyed a fine shooting night, drilling 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the floor, including 13-of-27 (.481) from behind the arc. At the foul line, Brown had a substantial advantage, converting 29-of-34 (.853) compared to just 9-of-10 (.900) for the Big Green.
Five Bears had at least 11 points with senior Peter Sullivan tallying 17 — going 10-of-10 at the line — Sean McGonagill 14, Tucker Halpern 12 and senior Garrett Leffelman 11.
Griffin kept the Green close during the first six minutes of play, scoring 12 of the team's 14 points with a trio of three-pointers and a three-point play. But Brown was in no mood to miss its shots with Williams providing eight points and a pair of treys in that span to allow the Bears to hold an 18-14 advantage.
Freshman
Gediminas Bertasius dropped in a layup with barely eight minutes gone in the game to make it a 25-18 contest, but Dartmouth would be held scoreless for more than seven minutes as Brown rattled off 19 straight points. Andrew McCarthy began the run with a layup, and Williams punctuated it with his fourth trifecta of the half, making it 44-18 with 4:55 until the break.
The drought was finally quenched by Melville with a three-pointer, which began a modest 9-2 Big Green spurt. McGonagill answered for the Bears with their last five points of the stanza before junior
David Rufful drained a three-pointer for Dartmouth to bring the scoring to a close with Brown leading, 51-30.
The Bears blistered the nets at a 59.3 percent clip (16-of-27) while Dartmouth hit just 12-of-33 (.364) in the opening frame, which included 14 consecutive shots off the mark during the scoreless stretch. Brown was also effective at getting to the foul line, hitting 11-of-13 while Griffin converted the only free throw of the half for the Green.
In the second half, the closest Dartmouth could come was 14 points when the Green outscored the Bears, 13-5, over a span of two-and-a-half minutes. Trotter nailed a three, then sank all three free throws after getting fouled in the corner. Senior
Ronnie Dixon hit a layup before Griffin knocked down two fouls shots and his final trey of the game with 11:13 to play, making it 68-54.
Three minutes later, the Brown lead was back to 21. Dartmouth head coach
Paul Cormier picked up his first technical foul of the season shortly thereafter as the Bears' advantage at the charity stripe mounted.
The Big Green ended the night shooting 40.0 percent (28-of-70), and an almost identical 40.7 percent (11-of-27) on three-point attempts. Dartmouth had not allowed 100 points to an opponent since Providence hit the mark on the nose in the second game of the 2008-09 season on Nov. 18, 2008.
The last time Brown reached the century milestone was in the 2003-04 season against Harvard.
Dartmouth returns home for the final two games of the season next weekend, hosting Princeton (22-5, 10-1 Ivy) at Leede Arena on Friday night at 7 p.m. before playing Penn (12-12, 7-4 Ivy) on Saturday for Senior Night at 7 p.m. Brown plays its last two contests on the road, making the journey to Cornell (7-19, 3-9 Ivy) on Friday for a game at 7 p.m.
