FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team opened the 2011 season at Florida Gulf Coast's Stevens Industries Tournament. The Big Green dropped its first game to St. Francis, 13-4 in six innings and fell to Colgate in game two, 6-1.
Against the Red Flash in the opening game, Dartmouth jumped on the scoreboard first when Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) came around on a Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) single to left field.
SFU tallied two in the top of the second and the third before Dartmouth cut into the total with one in the bottom of the third. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) got on base after hitting a single down the left side. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Britta McOmber (Bothell, Wash.) infield single.
St. Francis broke the game open in the top of the sixth by putting six across as the Big Green attempted a rally in the bottom half of the frame.
Hicks and Alexandra St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) each walked to start the inning before McOmber was also issued a walk to load the bases. Four straight walks by pitcher Megan Layne scored one and kept the bases loaded for reliever Michelle Spisak. A fielders choice play allowed one more run to come across before Kolodziej singled to load the bases one more time. A fifth SFU walk scored the third Dartmouth run but that was all the Big Green could get across as the contest ended at the bottom of the sixth.
Hubert and McOmber both recorded two hits with each knocking a run. In the circle, Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) went 4.1 innings with five strikeouts. Unfortuntely she gave up five earned runs as Hicks came on in relief and went 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, Colgate jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second before the Big Green tied the contest in the top of the fourth.
Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) singled to start the inning off and advanced on a wild pitch. She scored an unearned run when Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) got caught in a rundown as Dartmouth tied the game at 1-1.
The Raiders scored one more in the bottom of the frame before tacking on four in the sixth to take the victory. The Big Green had three straight singles in the top of the seventh but a double-play ended Dartmouth's rally.
Ramirez was 2-for-3 in the game while Bianca Smith (Sewickley, Pa.) scored the lone run. In the circle, Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) took the loss as she went 5.2 innings and had three strikeouts. Morgan Wharton (Binghamton, N.Y.) relieved Barker in the bottom of the sixth.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. game against UT-Martin and will end the day with an 8:15 matchup against host FGCU.
