FORT MYERS, Fla. – On day two of the Florida Gulf Coast Stevens Industries Tournament the Dartmouth softball team saw itself victorious for the first time in this short 2011 season. The Big Green defeated the University of Tennessee-Martin, 5-4 but unfortuntely could not keep the mometume going under the lights against host FGCU, falling 6-2.
Dartmouth is now 1-3 on the season and will continue at FGCU on Sunday with an 11:15 a.m. rematch with Colgate.
Senior Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) led the team in hits in the two games as she went 3-for-6 with one run scored. Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) all recorded two hits with Conceicao and Ramirez each adding to the run total. Ramirez hit the first home run of the season for the Big Green.
In the victory over UT-Martin Ramirez's grand slam bomb to left field in the bottom of the fifth erased a three-run Skyhawks lead and gave the Big Green the lead for first time in the contest.
UT-Martin began the contest with two unearned runs in the top of the first. Dartmouth go runners on in the bottom half of the frame but a double-play ended things quickly. The Skyhawks tacked on another in the third after three singles were hit and again in the bottom half of the inning, the Big Green had a chance to get on the board when Hubert was able to make it to third but she stayed there.
Ramirez's one-out bomb gave Dartmouth all the momentum it needed even after the Skyhawks put runners on in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the circle Barker allowed three runs, only one of them earned. She struck out three in 6.1 innings of work.
In the nightcap, a two-run homer gave FGCU a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Eagles tacked on another run in the third with a solo-shot over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
Dartmouth put two runs on the board in the fourth after a double from Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored Alexandra St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.). Kahlil crossed the plate on Kara Curosh's (Munster, Ind.) single to right field to come within one, 3-2.
The Big Green almost closed the gap in the fifth inning when it loaded the bases with two outs, but pitcher Kelci Breaux struck out the final batter to keep the lead.
In the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly to left field gave Chelsea Yates enough time to tag up for a 4-2 lead. Breaux struck out three straight in the top of the inning before FGCU secured the win with two more runs in the sixth.
In the circle, Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) took the loss, giving up four earned runs while striking out three.
