NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Dartmouth softball team opened up Ivy League play on Saturday afternoon with two victories over the Columbia Lions at the Columbia Softball Field. The Big Green recorded its second shutout of the season in the opening game, winning, 1-0 while an offensive onslaught gave Dartmouth a 9-4 win in the second contest as the Big Green improved to 7-10 overall, 2-0 in the league.
In the opening contest, Dartmouth scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) started things off with a two-out double to left field and came around on a Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) single to right. Dartmouth had runners at second and third before a ground out ended the innings.
The Big Green strung together six hits over the seven innings. In the circle, Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) got her third win of the season with the complete game victory. She gave up five hits while striking out one and issued no walks on the day.
Ramirez was the only Dartmouth player to record more then one hit, going 2-for-3.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Big Green put one run across in the third before plating three more in the second. The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with their first runs on the day. A four-run fifth and a one-run sixth helped Dartmouth put the game away.
Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) plated the first run for the Big Green in the top of the first before her infield single in the second scored two more. Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) singled up the middle to bring Everett home and give Dartmouth a 4-0 lead.
Two runs on three hits by the home team in the fourth put the Lions on the board. A two out single up the middle by Moone brought two around but the Big Green was not done.
In the top of the fifth, Hubert doubled to right field, moving a runner to third and bringing one home. A sacrifice fly by Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) while Hubert advanced to third. Hillary Barker's (Duvall, Wash.) first home run of the season scored two as suddenly the Big Green had an 8-4 lead.
The Lions put another one across in their bottom half of the frame but home run by Kolodziej in the top of the sixth allowed Dartmouth to get one back. Another run in the sixth by Columbia was all the scoring in the game.
Barker went the complete game, giving up three earned runs while striking out five to earn the win. Kolodziej and Barker each recorded two hits as the Big Green scored nine runs on 10 hits.
Dartmouth continues on the road with an Ivy League doubleheader at Penn tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m.
