HANOVER, N.H. – Home runs were the story of the day for the Dartmouth softball team as the Big Green posted seven homers and split an Ivy League doubleheader with Cornell on Friday afternoon. The Big Red took a 9-5 victory in the first game but Dartmouth rallied for a 9-6 win in the nightcap.
Cornell started the day quickly with four runs in the top of the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to take an early 8-0 lead.
The Big Green crawled out of the eight-run hole by putting five runs across in the bottom of the sixth. Dartmouth used six hits to plate the five runs, with four of those coming on two outs. Home runs by Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.), Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) and Britta McOmber (Bothell, Wash.) helped the Big Green cut the visitors lead to just three going into the seventh.
Cornell tacked another one in the top of the seventh for its ninth run as Dartmouth came to bat. Unfortunately the Big Red's starter, Elizabeth Dalrymple came back on in relief and shut the Big Green down in the bottom half of the frame, preventing any more runs for the home team.
In the game Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.), Barker and Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) and McOmber all had two hits with Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) leading the squad in RBIs with two. In the circle Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) got the loss, going five innings with three strikeouts. Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) came on in relief and struck out three while allowing just one run.
In the second game, Cornell started off hot yet again, piling up four runs through the first two innings. But home runs by Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) helped put five across in the third inning as Dartmouth took its first lead of day over the Big Red. A one-out single by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) put the first runner on before Ramirez homered. A walk to Khalil and a fielders choice by Barker had two on for Adam's home run.
Another long bomb, this time by Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) helped the Big Green add to its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Cornell made things interesting in the sixth when the Big Red tallied two and left two batters on but relief pitcher Hicks got the final batter to ground out to end the inning. Cornell stranded three batters in the final two innings as Hicks gave up a hit early in the seventh but a strikeout, and two groundouts ended the game as the Big Green came away victorious.
Kolodziej was tops, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Barker got her sixth win of the year as she pitched 5.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Dartmouth will be back in action at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader against Princeton.
