NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's tennis team opened play at the 2011 USTA Billie Jean King NTC Men's College Invitational on Friday, and five Big Green athletes advanced to the quarterfinals in their single's draw.
In the A Draw, junior Xander Centenari (Towson, Md.) upset the top-seeded Vasko Mladenov of St. John's in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance in the tournament. Senior Michael Laser (Glencoe, Ill.) moved on in the B Draw by defeating Alex Skinner of Boston College, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Cameron Ghorbani (Lexington, Mass.) upended Penn's Jeremy Court in the C Draw, 7-6, 6-1.
Sophomore Brandon DeBot (Stevens Point, Wis.), the fourth seeded player in the D Draw, won his opening match over Daniel Faierman of Yale, 6-1, 6-1. In the E Draw, freshman Sam Todd (Encinitas, Calif.) advanced with a victory over Billy Grokenberger of Boston College, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
In doubles, each of the three Dartmouth team's have lost a match. The combo of Centenari and Ghorbani lost its opening match in the A Draw, but bounced back to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. The team of senior Chris Ho (Los Altos, Calif.) and Todd lost their opening match in the C Draw, but moved on to the semifinals in the consolation bracket. In the B Draw, the duo of DeBot and freshman Chris Kipouras (San Ramon, Calif.) won their opening match before losing in the quarterfinals.
The invitational will continue on Saturday.
