LEWISBURG, PA. — The Dartmouth volleyball team improved to 3-0 with wins over Fordham and Bucknell at the Bucknell Tournament on Saturday. The Big Green swept both matches and have yet to drop a set all season. Fordham fell to 1-3 overall and Bucknell dropped to 1-2. Senior Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and sophomore Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.) each made the all-tournament team.
In the Fordham contest, senior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) set the pace for Dartmouth with 17 kills and eight digs. She committed only one attack error for an attack percentage of .381. The Big Green only trailed for one point in the entire match, winning the first set, 25-18, the second, 25-13, and the third, 25-21.
Villanueva joined Baird in double-digit kills with 13. She needed only 21 attempts for a .621 attack percentage. Senior Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) led Dartmouth with 14 digs. Scudder added nine kills. Junior Alissa Santa Maria (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was the primary passer and totaled 34 assists. The Big Green had an attack percentage of .370 and only committed seven attack errors.
Brittany Daulton led the Rams with 10 kills. Sara Konkel added 10 digs. Fordham had 24 attack errors and five service errors. The Rams finished the tournament at 0-3.
The match against Bucknell was the final contest of the tournament. The Big Green fell behind early in the first set, but righted the ship to win, 25-21. Dartmouth once again used the momentum from the first set to win the second easily, 25-13. In the third and final set, the Bisons took another early lead, but the Big Green fought back to close out the match, 25-20.
Villanueva reached double-digit kills again with 10. She has totaled 10-or-more kills in all three Dartmouth matches. Freshman Meghan Cooney (Martinez, Calif.) led the team with 12 kills. Freshman Alex Schoenberger (Corte Madera, Calif.) had nine kills, which was a season high. Bryant tallied 16 digs and Baird recorded 12.
Jessica Serrato tallied seven kills to lead Bucknell. Emily Sawanobori had the most digs with 11. The Bisons had 21 attack errors with only 26 kills. Bucknell finished 1-2 at the tournament with a victory over Fordham. Manhattan finished 2-1 at the tournament with its lone loss coming on Friday against Dartmouth.
Scudder made the all-tournament team after recording 20 kills on a .529 hitting percentage. She also had seven blocks. Villanueva totaled 34 kills in the three matches and had five blocks. Hollegn Henderson (Manhattan), Alexa Lampasona (Manhattan), Kristen Titley (Bucknell) and Daulton (Fordham) also made the team.
The Big Green will play four teams at the West Point Challenge next weekend, Sept. 9-11. Dartmouth opens against Arkansas at 10 a.m. on Friday.
