Ranked Team in Leede Arena
• For the first time since Dec. 30, 2000, Dartmouth will play host to a ranked team with Harvard (24th in the coaches poll) in town Saturday.
• The last ranked team to play in Leede Arena was Virginia, which was eighth in the Associated Press poll when it defeated the Big Green, 102-56. That game was also the most recent of the 29 sellouts in this arena.
• Dartmouth is coming off an 83-67 win over Longwood last Saturday, its highest scoring output against a Division I opponent in nearly four years.
• Freshman John Golden and Jvonte Brooks each tallied a season high in points with 17 and 16, respectively, leading five Big Green players in double figures in the triumph. Golden lit up the nets by hitting 5-of-6 three-pointers.
• The duo also led the team in rebounding with seven boards apiece, and in each game this year, a freshman has either led the team in rebounding or had a share of the lead.
• Dartmouth shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) for the game, its best efficiency since a win at Hartford in November of last season.
• The leading scorer for Dartmouth is currently junior R.J. Griffin at 9.6 points per game. But freshman Gabas Maldunas is right on his heels at 9.5 ppg. The last Big Green player to average 10 points for a season was the 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year, Alex Barnett.
Series vs. Harvard
• While Dartmouth has a comfortable 94-79 advantage all-time against the Crimson, Harvard has won the last five encounters.
• At Leede Arena, the Big Green have a 10-14 mark, but their last win in the series at home came four years ago in a 73-56 triumph.
• Paul Cormier is 12-8 against Harvard in his career, which includes three wins while at Fairfield.
• While Dartmouth dominated the first 60 years of the series with a 56-14 record through 1960, the the Big Green have mustered just a 38-65 mark since then, including a 5-19 record since 2000.
Scouting the Crimson
• Although Harvard fell out of the AP Top 25, it is still ranked 24th in the ESPN Coaches Poll with its only losses coming at UConn and Fordham.
• Nine of the Crimson's 15 victories have come away from Cambridge.
• Not surprisingly, the Crimson are overwhelming favorites to win the Ivy League title a year after earning their first conference crown, which they shared with Princeton.
• Harvard is one of the five stingiest defensive teams in the country, allowing just 55.1 points per game, and its scoring margin ranks among the top 35 nationally (+11.4).
• The top two scorers and rebounders are forwards Keith Wright (11.2 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Kyle Casey (11.0, 5.7). Wright would be among the top 15 most accurate shooters in the country at 60.4 percent, but he is four field goals shy of qualifying.
• While Casey is an occasional three-point threat, Laurent Rivard is one of the best shooters in the league with 42 threes at a 44.2 percent clip.
• Brandyn Curry runs the offense, averaging just over five assists per outing, and he is a pest on defense with a league-leading 34 steals.
• Tommy Amaker is in his fifth season as head coach at Harvard with an 81-53 record, plus is 257-192 in his career with stops at Seton Hall and Michigan.
Offense Breaks Out
With its 83-67 victory over Longwood on Jan. 14, Dartmouth scored more points against a Division I opponent than it had in nearly four years. The Big Green's field goal percentage (.547) was their best since last season's win at Hartford And their three-point percentage for the game (.625, 10-of-16) was their best with at least five makes against a D-I team in almost 12 years.
Five and 10 Coming Back in Style
Maybe I'm too old in bringing up a five and 10, but Dartmouth got at least 10 points from five players against Longwood, leading the Big Green to the win. Freshmen John Golden and Jvonte Brooks each tallied a season high with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while junior R.J. Griffin poured in 14, senior David Rufful 13 and freshman Gabas Maldunas 10. It was the second time this season that five Dartmouth players scored in double figures.
Golden Touch
Since starting the year 7-for-37 (.189) shooting the ball, freshman John Golden has found his touch. He began with a 5-of-7 performance for a 13 points versus Central Michigan on Nov. 26, and most recently knocked down 6-of-8 field goals with five triples for his season-high 17 points against Longwood. In the last 12 games, he is clipping the nets at 52.4 percent (33-63) and averaging 8.0 ppg.
Rufful-ed Feathers
The 13 points scored by David Rufful versus Longwood all came during crunch time of the final nine minutes. The Lancers had tied the game at 52 before teammate Gabas Maldunas gave Dartmouth the lead with a bucket. Rufful then proceeded to score 13 of the next 25 Big Green points to help them cruise to its largest margin of victory since a 17-point win over Colgate on Nov. 27, 2010.
League Play Begins
The Big Green got their first taste of Ivy action last weekend with the difficult assignment of playing at then-21st-ranked Harvard. Yet Dartmouth held its own, trailing by just one at the break and taking a six-point lead five minutes into the second half before the Crimson stormed back to defeat the Green, 63-47.
Playing a Ranked Opponent
For the first time in over five years, the Big Green had the opportunity to go head-to-head with a team ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 when they played at #22 Harvard (21 in the coaches poll) on Jan. 7. Dartmouth lost by 16, its closest game with a ranked team since an 82-68 loss to seventh-ranked North Carolina in Leede Arena on Dec. 19, 1998. Against teams ranked in the AP poll, which dates back to January of 1949, the Big Green are now 3-49. For those wondering, Dartmouth was ranked for five weeks during the 1957-58 season.
Piling Up the Threes
Over a three-game stretch to end the 2011 calendar year, Dartmouth was hitting just about every other three-point attempt, going 31-of-63 (.492) from downtown. Dartmouth hit 12 three-pointers in each of the first two games during the stretch, a total it had not reached but once in the previous 227 games. Freshman John Golden provided the team's 100th triple on the season during the loss at Harvard, then half of the Big Green's 10 triples in the win over Longwood.
