FARMVILLE, Va. - Junior guard Faziah Steen (Detroit, Mich.) tallied her second consecutive 20 point game with a game-high 29 points in a 86-76 loss to Longwood at Willett Hall on Saturday (Jan. 21).
Steen led all scorers, and posted her third game of 20 or more points. She was joined in double figure by teammates freshman guard Milica Toskovic (Santa Monica, Calif.) and reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, center Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) who posted 12 points in the loss. Sophomore forward Arianne Hunter (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led the Dartmouth rebounding effort with a game-high eight rebounds.
The Big Green made things interesting down the stretch with some timely three-point shooting. Trailing 77-65 with 1:02 remaining in the contest, two three-pointers from Steen and Toskovic cut the Longwood lead to six points, 77-71, but the Lancers made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Trailing 54-44 at the 11:36 mark of the second half, a basket from Dawson got the game under 10 points for the first time since the opening minutes of the second half. The teams traded buckets, but the Lancers were able to keep the game in double figures for he majority of the second half.
Dartmouth (2-13, 0-1 Ivy) posted a solid defensive effort, outrebounding its opponent for the third consecutive game. The Big Green's post players also showcased their skills outscoring the Logwood post players, 32-28. The Big Green also held a 17-13 advantage in second chance points.
Both teams started the game quickly getting up and down the floor, but sloppy play characterized the early goings as neither could generate much offense early with Longwood (5-17) taking the early 5-4 lead at the first media timeout of the game.
Longwood made the first run of the game and with eight unanswered points took a 24-13 lead before a bucket from Toskovic ended a three-minute Dartmouth scoring drought.
Steen inserted some life into the Dartmouth offense and with five straight points, cut the Longwood lead to five points, 25-20, at the 6:33 mark, but the Lancers were able to get going from long range, hitting three triples and taking a 41-30 halftime lead.
The Big Green struggled with turnovers in the contest, throwing the ball away 25 times leading to 25 Longwood points. In a testament to Dartmouth's balance, everyone scored at least two points and two rebounds for the second time this season.
Dartmouth returns to Ivy League action next week when it hosts Brown and Yale. The Big Green takes on Brown on Friday (Jan. 27) at 7 p.m. before closing the weekend against Yale on Sunday (Jan. 29) at 2 p.m.
