HANOVER, N.H. - Unlike the men's team that needed points in the final race of the day to take the top spot, the Dartmouth women's indoor track & field team had locked up its team title at the 2012 Dartmouth Relays much earlier in the afternoon.
Finishing with 144 points on the day at Leverone Field House, the Big Green cruised to their second straight first-place finish at the Dartmouth Relays. The 43rd annual event saw the home team run away with the team crown, beating second-place UMass Lowell by 117 points (161-44).
Strong showings in the mile, 800 meters and the weight throw helped Dartmouth pick up big point figures to help put away the competition early.
Senior Alexi Pappas (Alameda, Calif.) took the top spot in the mile, finishing in 4:50.74. Fellow senior Christina Supino (Windham, N.H.) was second in 4:53.47, while freshman Alison Lanois (South Hamilton, Mass.) was fourth in 5:05.88. Senior Elizabeth Short (North reading Mass.) was the final member in the scoring for the Big Green as she ran a 5:12.61 to place sixth and earn one point.
The 800 meters saw five of the top six finishers, including the first four, all wearing green. Sophomore Arianna Vailas (Manchester, N.H.) placed first in 2:15.42, earning 10 points in the process. Vailas was followed soon thereafter in the scoring by junior Kaitlyn D'Orazio (York, Maine), freshman Meggie Donovan (Auburn, N.H.) and junior Christine Bub (Strykersville, N.Y.). Senior Renee Domozych (Great River, N.Y.) placed sixth and rounded out the Dartmouth scoring in the event.
Sophomore Megan Krumpoch (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a day for herself as she won the 400 meters in 57.94 and placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.17 to earn another point for the team. She would also factor later in the day as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team.
The Big Green's 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams also earned points. The 4x200 was sixth in 1:51.31, while the 4x400 team produced one of the most exciting finishes of the day, taking second. Krumpoch closed a substantial gap on UMass Lowell's Ashley Zielinksi on the second lap of the final leg, but was edged at the line by just three-hundredths of a second as the River Hawks earned the 10 points in 3:59.54 to Dartmouth's 3:59.57.
It wasn't just on the track that the Big Green dominated. Impressive showings from sophomore Janae Dunchack (Northern Cambria, Pa.) in the high jump (2nd - 5-6.00/1.68m), senior Rocco Pallin (Kenosha, Wis.) in the long jump (3rd - 16-11.25/5.16m) and both Erica Hendershot (West Simsbury, Conn.) and Berkeley Hall (Pembroke, Mass.) in the triple jump all helped Dartmouth add to its mammoth point total.
Another dominating group for the home team were the throwers on Sunday. Junior Emmaline Berg (Holliston, Mass.) took first in the shot put with a mark of 47-1.75/14.37m. Second-place Corinne Kominkiewicz (East Brunswick, N.J.) recorded a mark of 43-9.25/13.34m, while Christina Alexander (Austin, Texas) placed fourth with a throw of 40-2.75/12.26m.
Cathy Liebowitz (Plainfield, N.H.) led the Big Green contingent in the weight throw with a second-place performance (52-10.75/16.12m). Alexander (49-7.00/15.11m), Kominkiewicz (44-5.5/13.55m) and Berg (44-4.75/13.53m) held the next three places for the Big Green as well.
The women will return to action next week, as Leverone will once again host another meet. This upcoming meet will feature Vermont, Maine and Rensselaer on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a scheduled start of noon.
