BOSTON - The Dartmouth men's indoor track & field team benefited from big performances from several of its team members Saturday afternoon at Boston University's Valentine Invitational.
No other performance may have been bigger to the Big Green than sophomore John Bleday's (Westwood, Mass.) first-place finish in the 3,000 meters. Bleday ran an 8:03.78 to take the top spot in an event that featured over 100 competitors.
Bleday's time ranks sixth all-time at Dartmouth and is the fastest mark in nearly nine years for any Big Green runner in the event.
Joining Bleday as a first-place finisher on Saturday was senior Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) in the 5,000 meters. Shaw took home the top spot in the event with a 14:16.17, more than six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Senior Matt Miner (Asheland, Ore.) also had an impressive showing Saturday afternoon in Beantown.
In the mile race, Miner claimed 14th in a field of more than 250 competitors in 4:04.37. That time ranks as the sixth-fastest in program history in one of the longest-tenured events in the storied history of the sport.
It is the first time in four years that a Big Green runner came within five seconds of the four-minute mile mark. In 2008, both Ben True and Harry Norton were in that same time with True's 3:59.99 setting the Dartmouth standard in the event.
Junior Connor Reilly (Niskayuna, N.Y.) eclipsed his season-best time in the 60 meters to take eighth in Saturday's finals. Reilly ran the seventh fastest time in Dartmouth track & field history, crossing the line in 6.93.
Just a week a go, the junior sprinter ran a 6.94 at the Dartmouth Indoor Classic, a time he surpassed by just one-hundredth of a second Saturday afternoon in Boston. He is also the program's record holder in the event, running a 6.84 at Heps last winter.
The meet was held at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center and was non-scoring.
Senior Evan Bryant (Baltimore, Md.) also ran well in the 800 meters. Bryant's 1:05.13 is the 19th fastest mark in school history and set a new personal best for the senior. Bryant actually pushed himself down one spot on the all-time list in the event, as he previously ran a 1:05.32 almost a year ago to the day (Feb. 12, 2011).
Josh Cyphers (Grantham, N.H.) took fourth in the pole vault at BU. The sophomore cleared 14-11.00/4.55m on his first attempt at the height.
In the high jump, freshman Jeremy Birck (Libertyville, Ill.) claimed fifth. Birck had no problem with the first four heights of the day, clearing each on his first attempt. It wasn't until the sixth that he was unable to clear the bar. His final mark of the afternoon was 6-6.25/1.99m to earn fifth place.
It wasn't just a day at BU for the Big Green. Dartmouth's throwers went to Durham to compete at UNH as well.
On the men's side, the day by the Seacoast was highlighted by sophomore Dom Filiano's (Lebanon, N.H.) second-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 53-5.00/16.28m.
Filiano also led Dartmouth in the weight throw, finishing fourth with a distance of 51-0.50/16.80m.
The women were led at UNH by junior Emmaline Berg (Holliston, Mass.) and her first-place showing in the shot put. Berg's throw of 46-11.00/14.30m earned the top spot in the event, while senior Christina Alexander (Austin, Texas), sophomore Corrine Kominkiewicz (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Corrine Romano (Bedminster, N.J.) claimed second through fourth, respectively. Freshman Cathy Liebowitz (Plainfield, N.H.) was sixth in the event.
Alexander led the Big Green in the weight throw, taking fifth with a toss of 49-10.50/15.20m.
Dartmouth will have a bit of a break and will not compete next week. Instead, the Big Green will next return to competition at the 2012 Heps hosted by Cornell on Feb. 24-25.
