HANOVER, N.H. — On Wednesday, senior Kip Dooley (Minneapolis, Minn.) was named a candidate for the men's lacrosse Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Dooley is one of only 20 men's lacrosse players in the country to earn this honor. The award spotlights those student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and community, while staying in school all four years.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
Dooley is the Big Green's top returning scorer from the 2011 season. He totaled 14 goals and a team-high 19 assists for 33 points, which all marked career highs. He is also currently on a 14-game point streak. In the classroom, Dooley maintains a 3.52 GPA in History, and last year he earned Dartmouth's Class of 1950 Award for the student-athlete who has demonstrated the most extraordinary commitment to community service.
In the community, he participates in Big Green Readers, where Dartmouth athletes go and read to school children in the community, and he and the rest of the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team visit David's House. Dooley is a captain of the men's lacrosse team for the second year and he serves as a writing tutor and teaching assistant for freshmen writing courses at Dartmouth. Dooley is just one of four players from the Ivy League to earn one of the 20 spots along with Cornell's Rob Pannell, Princeton's Chad Wiedmaier and Yale's Gregory Mahony.
The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I men's coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Dooley's full profile can be found here.
