HANOVER, N.H. — No. 18 Harvard opened Saturday's game with a vengeance and wouldn't look back in defeating the 11th ranked Dartmouth men's lacrosse team, 18-7. The Big Green opened the second half with three straight goals, but the 11-1 halftime deficit proved too much to overcome.
Mason Morel finished with 16 saves in goal, marking his fifth straight game with 16 or more.
Dartmouth falls to 7-3 and 1-2 in the Ivy League while Harvard improves to 8-2 and 2-1 in the league.
Offensively,
Thomas Power had a hand in five of Dartmouth's goals, finishing with a goal and four assists.
Colin McGill scored three times, including his seventh man-up goal of the season which is among the nation's leaders in that category.
Harvard's Jack Speidell scored the game's first three goals and finished with six goals and an assist to lead the Crimson. Speidell's third made the score 3-0 less than five minutes into the contest.
The goals kept coming, with the Crimson opening a 7-0 lead after one quarter and 9-0 advantage in the second. Harvard won 5-of-8 first-quarter faceoff and was strong in turning the Big Green over (six in the first quarter), leading to Dartmouth's first offensive zone possession coming with less than five minutes left in the first quarter.
McGill snapped the drought at 5:31 of the second quarter, but Crimson goals at 1:41 and 1:34 made the halftime score 11-1.
Goals from McGill,
Jackson Monte and McGill again pulled the Big Green within 11-4 with 10:25 on the third-quarter clock, but Harvard erased any thoughts of a Dartmouth comeback with the next three goals to take a 14-4 advantage after a Jack Petersen goal with 1:57 left in the third.
The teams traded goals from there on out, until two consecutive Harvard goals to close the game accounted for the 18-7 final.
Final shots were 53-21 in favor of Harvard, with the Crimson holding a 43-34 edge in groundballs. Twenty-two Dartmouth turnovers hurt, while Harvard had just nine.
Spencer Reagan won 17-of-27 faceoffs for the Big Green.
The Big Green will look to bounce back next Saturday for a critical Ivy League showdown at Yale. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
