COLUMBIA, S.C. - Saturday marked a busy day of competition for the Dartmouth men's outdoor track & field as it split up between two meets in the Carolinas. The majority of the team's athletes were at South Carolina's Weems Baskin Invitational, while several went to High Point's VertKlasse Meeting in North Carolina.
The highlight of the day for the Big Green was three runners setting personal records in the 200 meters.
Connor Reilly (Niskayuna, N.Y.) won his heat in 21.80 despite warming up for an early heat only to find out he had moved back to one later in the competition, interrupting his preparation for the race.
Freshman Brett Buskey (Blackstone, Mass.) also won his heat in the event and placed 15th overall in a field of more than 60. His time of 22.03 was slightly ahead of fellow Dartmouth sprinter Tyrone DeSpenza (New Orleans, La.) one spot back in 22.04.
Brett Gilson (Richboro, Pa.) took fifth in the javelin (191-1/58.25m), while Josh Cyphers (Grantham, N.H.) was seventh in the pole vault (14-5.25/4.40m) on this day.
Many other Big Green members competed at Weems, but delays all day caused by a series of storms and lightning strikes in the Columbia area eventually resulted in the cancelation of several events late Saturday.
Head coach Barry Harwick took only a handful of runners to High Point to compete in two events Saturday afternoon as well.
Sophomore Henry Sterling (South Freeport, Maine) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase I 9:18.98, trailing just two runners from Duke in the event
In the 3,000 meters, junior Matt Miner (Ashland, Ore.) took fourth in 15:15.94 in a field of 26 runners.
The Big Green will now return home and enjoy a week off before returning to the track April 7-8 at Princeton's Sam Howell Invite and the George Davis Invitational in Lowell.
