HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman Jonathan Nierenberg scored a pair of goals in the second-half as the Dartmouth men's soccer team defeated Yale, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Burnham Field.
#RV Dartmouth improves to 7-2-1 overall and are 2-0-0 (6 points) in the Ivy League. With the win, the Big Green increases its unbeaten streak to eight games and have not dropped a game since the first weekend of the season. The defeat pushes Yale further away in the Ivy standings as the Bulldogs are still winless on the season (0-8-2).
Dartmouth outshot Yale, 14-3, and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
“Firstly credit to Yale, they are very tough and I knew coming into this game it would be one of our toughest tests of the year. I have watched many of their games and they have been awfully unlucky,” said head coach Chad Riley.
“Alex Adelabu, Hugh Danilack and the rest of the senior class provided excellent leadership as they have all year. They have been excellent role models on how a Dartmouth student-athlete should act and carry himself.”
It took just four minutes for the Big Green to get on the board as a throw in by freshman Tyler Dowse was sent into the box and pair of headers put the ball in the back of the cage. Senior Nick Rooney received the toss and aerially moved the ball over to Adelabu for the goal, as Dowse's throw never touched the ground.
Yale tied the contest in the 12th minute on a shot by Ollie Iselin. After Dartmouth failed to clear the zone, Iselin stole the ball away from a Big Green defender and surprised the keeper with a low shot to the near post.
“I thought the first goal was well taken by the Yale player and we just made a meal of the play directly before their goal. I thought their goal woke us up and we really started to play,” commented Riley.
After the tying tally, the Big Green kept the ball inside Yale's zone and had a chance to score in the 38th minute but Yale keeper Blake Brown made a nice save on a rolling shot by junior Alberto Gorini.
Tied at the half, Dartmouth regained the lead in the 60th minute on a deflection by Nierenberg off an initial shot by Dowse. Nierenberg then potted his second of the day after he dribbled the ball off a pass by senior Robin Alnas and proceeded to send a blast from 25 yards away.
“Jonny has been playing well all year, he is just as solid as they come and I thought he was a difference maker today. I was glad to see him rewarded with goals as he is always doing the dirty work in the games,” continued Riley.
The Big Green scored their third goal of the half in the 77th minute on a goal by Hugh Danilack. Dartmouth pressured inside Yale's zone and sent a cross that was caught by Brown, but then dropped by the keeper. Adelabu crashed the net and sent a pass to Danilack for the tally.
Dartmouth had another chance to increase the lead in the 79th minute on a one-time pass by Adelabu to senior Gabe Stauber that was punched out by Brown.
Junior Stefan Cleveland made one save on two shots for his fifth win of the season. Brown stopped four shots from the Big Green.
Dartmouth will conclude its four-game homestand next week with contests against Boston U. on Tuesday and Penn on Saturday.
