HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth volleyball team capped a remarkable come-from-behind victory Friday night against visiting Brown to remain unbeaten in Ivy League play with a five-set win (25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 26-24,15-12) inside Leede Arena.
The Big Green trailed two games to one and were down as many as five points in the fourth before mounting a fevered comeback to take the set, 26-24. In the fifth and decisive game, Dartmouth took control midway through and never relinquished the lead, holding on for the 3-2 win.
With the win, the Green improve to 11-2 overall this season and 2-0 in Ancient Eight games. The Bears, who were just points away from victory in the fourth, fall to 5-9 overall and remain winless at 0-2 in conference tilts.
“Obviously I am very happy to get the 'W' tonight,” head coach Erin Lindsey said after the game. “I am proud of the team's perseverance in battling when we were backed up. If we are going to contend for a championship in this league, we need to remain composed in situations that challenge us.
“Brown's defense was very strong and there were points when we were having trouble finding places to score,” Lindsey continued. “We were able to counter that with resilience and a high level of sustained effort all night.”
Brown nearly put together a comeback of its own in the fifth set. Trailing, 13-7, the Bears strung together five straight points to pull to within one. But Dartmouth snapped the streak and finished the game with the final two points.
Leading the way for the home team on this night was junior Paige Caridi, who finished with 19 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore Emily Astarita and junior Kaira Lujan were Dartmouth's other two players to reach double figures in kills with 16 and 11, respectively.
Sophomore Julia Lau had a game-high 25 digs, edging out Brown's Kathryn Conner who had 24 on the other side of the net.
Kayden Cook and Stacey Benton combined for 52 of Dartmouth's 58 assists as both the sophomore and junior had matching game highs of 26. The Bears were led by 24 from Maryl Vanden bos and Sarah Lucenti's 23.
Dartmouth is back in action Saturday at 5 p.m. when it plays host to Yale in Ivy League action inside Leede Arena.
