HANOVER, N.H. — Senior Ryan McManus and freshman Ryder Stone each scored three touchdowns to lead the Dartmouth Big Green to a 44-21 victory over the visiting Brown Bears (4-5, 2-4 Ivy) on Senior Day in front of 4,059 fans at Memorial Field. The victory allowed Dartmouth (7-2, 5-1 Ivy) to win seven games for the first time in 17 years and keep pace with undefeated Harvard in the Ivy League standings with one game to play.
McManus, Dartmouth's leading receiver this season, caught a career-high 13 passes for 154 yards and the first three Big Green touchdowns of the day to become the first Dartmouth player with three TD receptions in a game in 13 years. Stone, on the other hand, entered the game with exactly two rushing attempts for two yards in his career. But with the top three running backs unavailable by the start of the second half, the rookie took advantage of his opportunity and bolted for 114 yards on just 10 carries, three of which ended in the end zone. The last of Stone's scoring runs was a 63-yard sprint, the longest play from scrimmage this season.

In the meantime, quarterback Dalyn Williams was overshadowed despite throwing for 248 yards and running for exactly 100, his second career 100-yard game on the ground and the first time Dartmouth had two 100-yard rushers in the same game since 2007. The junior connected on a career-best 75.8 percent (25-of-33) of his passes with McManus grabbing more than half of those completions.
The three offensive stars allowed the Big Green to top 500 total yards (519) for a second straight week, split almost evenly between the running game (season-high 266) and through the air (253). The Bears, meanwhile, were held to 302 yards, and only 127 after their first three possessions.
The game looked as if it would be anything but a blowout in the first half as Brown twice had the lead and the Big Green did not go on top until the a 30-yard field goal by sophomore Alex Gakenheimer as the half expired to give Dartmouth a 17-14 advantage. The Bears struck first by driving 75 yards on 14 plays, capped by Andrew Coke's one-yard touchdown dive for a 7-0 lead less than seven minutes after the opening kick.
Dartmouth responded immediately with an 81-yard drive of its own. McManus caught five passes during the series, including the final three plays, the last a 25-yard rainbow from Williams that dropped into McManus' arms in the end zone after he shed his defender.
Bears quarterback Marcus Fuller went right back to work against the Big Green defense, completing passes of 11 and 28 yards to Reiley Higgins before finding Brian Strachan for a 15-yard scoring strike and a 14-7 Brown lead on the first play of the second quarter.
Again Dartmouth answered, but not before starting tailback Kyle Bramble was injured on the first play of the ensuing drive and lost for the rest of the game. Sophomore Abrm McQuarters replaced him and contributed an 11-yard run, but Williams was the star of the drive, running for 43 yards on four carries and completing all four of his passes. The final two went to McManus with the second a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14 with 11:02 left in the half.
The Big Green defense got the stop it was looking for on the next Brown possession, although the Bears drove down to the Dartmouth eight. Brown head coach Phil Estes elected to go for it on 4th-and-2 with a Wildcat formation, only to have Brian Strachan stopped a yard short of the sticks.
Following dueling punts, Dartmouth had little more than two minutes to drive the length of the field from its own 11 before halftime. A 19-yard pass to McManus and a 25-yard keeper by Williams helped the Big Green advance into the red zone before settling for Gakenheimer's 30-yard field goal to take a 17-14 lead into the locker room.
The second half belonged to Dartmouth, however, starting with an interception by junior linebacker Will McNamara, who returned the pick 20 yards before recovering his own fumble at the Brown eight-yard line. Two plays later, McManus had his third touchdown of the afternoon on a four-yard fade.
Brown managed just one first down on its next two possessions before the Big Green added to their lead. Stone began a six-play, 52-yard scoring drive with a 14-yard run, then capped it off by burrowing a yard for his first collegiate touchdown.
The lone Dartmouth sack of the afternoon — courtesy of sophomore linebacker Folarin Orimolade — caused Fuller to fumble, which Orimolade was able to recover at the Brown 32. Five plays later, Stone barreled into the end zone from four yards out. The extra point was blocked, but Dartmouth still owned a commanding 37-14 lead with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Brown failed to convert a 4th-and-8 at the Big Green 37 with 8:30 to play. Stone erased whatever fleeting hopes the Bears had left of making a miraculous comeback when he bolted 63 yards for the final Dartmouth points of the day.
Brown tacked on an 18-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Kyle Moreno to Troy Doles with 3:21 left one play after a Big Green fumble.
McNamara, the Ivy League's leading tackler, led the Dartmouth defense with 10 stops, his sixth game this season in double figures, to go along with his key interception. Overall the defense found its stride by the middle of the second quarter as the line began to apply more pressure.
Fuller completed 16-of-30 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown for the Bears with Strachan leading the team with six receptions for 65 yards and the TD reception. Terrell Smith had a team-best 41 yards rushing on seven carries, and Jordan Ferguson led all players with 12 tackles.
Dartmouth wraps up the 2014 season at Princeton (5-4, 4-2 Ivy) next Saturday in a game that will be broadcast by ESPN3 at 1 p.m. The Big Green can share the Ivy League title with Harvard (9-0, 6-0 Ivy) and Yale (8-1, 5-1 Ivy) if the Bulldogs can knock off the 17th-ranked Crimson in Cambridge. Brown concludes its season at home on Saturday when it hosts Columbia (0-9, 0-6 Ivy) at 12:30 p.m.
Notes: The last Big Green player with three touchdown catches in a game was Matt DeLellis '02 who snared three in a 32-27 win at Yale on Oct. 7, 2001 ... the last Dartmouth duo to run for 100 yards in a game was Nate Servis '09 (130) and Rob Mitchelson '10 (105) in a 37-28 win over Columbia on Oct. 20, 2007.
