Big Green Fall at Cornell in Final Game of the Season

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 2014 season came to an end Saturday afternoon for the Dartmouth field hockey team as it fell, 4-1, at Cornell's Dodson Field.

The Big Green wrap-up the season with a 3-4 Ivy League record and a 5-12 overall mark. The Big Red also finished up their season, improving to 11-5 and 5-2 in Ancient Eight games with the win.

The visitors actually got on the board first as junior Brooke Van Valkenburg netted her third of the season in the 12th minute, blasting a shot into the cage on a penalty corner.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Cornell's Sam McIlwrick scored two of her three goals in the remaining portion of the first half. She redirected two penalty corner attempts for markers in the 17th and 34th minutes, respectively.

After Kysten Mayers netted her 10th of the fall season on a rebound goal in the 55th minute, McIlwrick capped her hat trick with a direct attempt on a corner play in the 62nd.

Assisting on the Van Valkenburg tally were senior co-captains Ali Savage and Janine Leger. It seemed fitting that Savage earn a point in her final collegiate game as the Australian native ends her four-year run in Hanover with 119, good for second all-time in program history.

Savage also finishes things up wearing green and white second all-time at Dartmouth with 47 career goals.

Leger closes the chapter on her collegiate career with 15 goals, 25 assists and 55 points. In that time, Leger also started in all of the Big Green's 68 games.

The final member of the senior class playing in her last game in a Dartmouth uniform was goalkeeper Ellen Meyer. The Prospect, Kentucky, native turned aside 10 Cornell shots in the game, giving her a conference-leading 148 saves this season — a figure that also ranks as the third-best in a single season by a Big Green keeper.

Meyer capped her career with 317 total saves, fifth-most in program, history.

At the other end of the field, Cornell's Kelly Johnson made five saves of her own.
