HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac's Soren Jonzzon scored at 1:48 of overtime to hand the Dartmouth men's hockey team a 2-1 loss at the TD Bank Sports Center Friday night in an ECAC Hockey matchup.
The fifteenth-ranked Bobcats (10-4-1) continue to hold down the top spot in the league standings with a 6-1-0 record and 12 points following the victory. The Big Green saw their two-game win streak snapped as they fall to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey contests.
“We had a lead late, but credit them (Quinnipiac) for battling back,” head coach Bob Gaudet said afterward. “We worked hard from the goalie on out, but we just didn't get the result we were looking for tonight.”
Tyler Sikura scored his third goal of the season to finally break the scoreless tie at 9:28 of the second period. The goal may be the prettiest of the captain's career as he batted a fluttering puck out of the air to the left of the net and into the far corner. A video review of the play concluded that Sikura had not hit the puck with a high stick above the crossbar and it stood for the 1-0 lead.
Playing in his 100th career game, senior Eric Robinson was credited with the assist on the play as it was his shot that was directed intot he air for Sikura. Rick Pinkston picked up the other assist.
Quinnipiac avoided its first home shutout in two years and ended Dartmouth's streak of 103:58 without allowing a goal when freshman Landon Smith hit the top right corner on an odd-man rush at 3:36 of the third, tying things up at 1-1 and setting up overtime.
Jonzzon's redirect in the high slot in a crowd managed to find space between the pads of James Kruger for the winner. The Dartmouth goaltender finished the game with 32 saves as the home team managed a 34-20 advantage in shots.
“James (Kruger) has been great all season,” Gaudet said of his junior netminder. “He has been cool, calm and done and outstanding job between the pipes for us this season.”
The game was physical and marred by countless penalties. Neither team managed to take advantage with the extra skater as the Green were 0-for-5 and the Bobcats were 0-for-6 on the power play.
The Big Green now hop on the bus and make the trip south to taken on Princeton Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The ECAC Hockey and Ivy League contest is set for 7 p.m. puck drop.
