JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Megan Krumpoch became the first Dartmouth student-athlete to punch her ticket the 2014 NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championship with a qualifying finish in the 800m Friday night at North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Krumpoch will head to Eugene, Oregon, and Hayward Field for the NCAA Championship meet (June 11-14) after running a 2:05.68 and claiming third in her heat.
Overall Krumpoch posted the 12th-best qualifying time, a mark that would have earned her the last spot in the national semifinals, but by finishing in the top-three in her heat, the senior from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, automatically earned the right to head to Oregon in two weeks.
Besides the drama of Krumpoch's first trip to an outdoor championship meet and a possible third All-America honor of 2013-14 (indoor 800m, distance medley relay), there was a high level of commotion and confusion surrounding the results of the women's high jump.
Big Green sophomore Kaitlin Whitehorn cleared 5-9.75/1.77m and went into a jump-off with three others where she was credited with a 5-8.75/1.75m. It was originally thought that the Dartmouth sophomore had earned a trip to Oregon with that measurement, but it was announced more than an hour later that a procedural error had occurred and she would not be advancing after all.
Whitehorn was mistakenly allowed to take an extra attempt at the final height by on-site officials, nullifying her qualifying mark. The problem stemmed from the thought that the jump-off was for three spots when it was really only for two, leaving Whitehorn on the outside looking in.
In the final race of the day, Sarah Delozier claimed 28th in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Delozier ran a 10:28.55 to take sixth in her heat, but that time would not hold on to one of the three at-large berths earning a spot in Eugene as the final two sections of the event followed.
Sara Kikut finished fifth in her heat and 34th overall with a time of 23.96 (+0.9) in the 200m. That time and finish were not enough to see Kikut join her teammates in Oregon as her season came to an end.
In the final day of competition in North Florida on Saturday, Emmaline Berg (shot put), Abbey D'Agostino (5000m) and Dana Giordano (5000m) will all represent the Green and White with the final three chances at earning spots at nationals.
