HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Brad Schierhorn scored with 9:29 left in regulation to help the Dartmouth men's hockey team come back and force No. 15 Colgate into a 2-2 tie Friday night at Starr Rink.
Trailing by a goal after a Kyle Baun tally five minutes earlier, Schierhorn's sixth of the season was the result of a Ryan Bullock keep at the blueline and a well-placed centering feed to the top of the paint for the one-timer and game-tying goal.
The star of the night, though, was at the other end of the ice as junior netminder James Kruger turned aside 31 shots, including two flashy glove saves in the overtime period when his team needed it most.
The tie helped Dartmouth push its record to 6-8-4 overall and 3-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play for eight points, one behind idle Union for ninth place. The Raiders looked like they would take this game after a dominating stretch in the middle portion of the contest, but the Schierhorn goal and subsequent tie pushed their mark to 14-7-2 overall and 6-3-2 in league play (14 points).
Senior Eric Robinson got the scoring started with his fifth of the season on a snapshot right off a faceoff at the 7:32 mark of the second period, beating Colgate netminder Charlie Finn low to the stickside. Tyler Sikura picked up his ninth assist of the season, winning the draw cleanly to his winger stationed behind him at the top of the circle.
However, the lead lasted just 47 seconds as Colgate's John Lidgett snuck a shot along the goal line off the inside of Kruger's left pad for the equalizer.
Baun's goal at 6:44 of the third gave the home team their first lead of the night. Dartmouth continued to battle, though, turning up the intensity looking for the equalizer that would eventually come from the junior winger and Alaska native just past the midway point of the third.
Robinson was credited with an assist on the tying goal, giving him two points on the night and 70 for his career.
The Big Green finished the evening 0-for-3 with the man-advantage, while Colgate was 1-for-5 on the power play.
Dartmouth continues the weekend in Central New York with a tilt against Ivy League and ECAC Hockey foe Cornell Saturday night in Ithaca. The Big Red earned a last-minute win against No. 4 Harvard on Friday.
