HANOVER, N.H. — Sophomore Fanni Szabo led the Big Green with 14 points, but the Penn Quakers etched out a 55-39 victory at Leede Arena in Ivy League play on Friday evening.
Dartmouth fell to 10-7 overall and 1-2 in the Ivies. Penn moves up to 10-6 on the year and 1-1 in the Ancient Eight.
Juniors Lakin Roland and Daisy Jordan each finished with six points. Roland added nine rebounds — all defensive — and Jordan had four. The Big Green finished the contest shooting 27 percent and forced 22 Penn turnovers.
Freshman Olivia Smith had four points and three rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Sydney Stipanovich paced Penn with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kara Bonenberger contributed nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kathleen Roche was the second Quaker to score in double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds. The Quakers outrebounded the Big Green 44-28.
Dartmouth took its only lead of the game on the first possession on a layup by Szabo. The Quakers offense struggled for the opening 10 minutes before a 6-0 run gave them a 14-8 lead with 8:37 left. Szabo lessened the deficit with a layup at 7:49, but four points by Ross and a jumper by Melanie Lockett increased the Quakers advantage, 20-10, at 5:07. The visitors went into the locker room with a 24-14 lead despite committing 12 turnovers and shooting 42 percent from the field. Szabo's six points paced the Big Green, who shot 21 percent from the floor. Both sides had 10 points each inside.
In the second half, the Quakers pulled away after Dartmouth held the deficit at single digits, but a layup by Roche made it 33-22 with 14:12 left. Penn's largest lead of the contest was 23 (51-23) with 5:30 left. Dartmouth finished the contest outscoring Penn, 16-4, as late momentum pushed in favor of the hosts.
Penn finished the contest shooting 45 percent overall and connected on 10-of-18 from the line. Of the 44 rebounds secured by the Quakers, 12 came on the offensive glass. Penn did a majority of its scoring in the inside with 24 points in the paint.
Dartmouth welcomes No. 19/21 Princeton on Saturday to Leede Arena at 6 p.m. Princeton defeated Harvard 96-46 on Friday evening. Penn will also meet the Crimson at 6 p.m.
