Harvard Recap
Harvard erased a 14-point second-half deficit and took its first lead with 1:01 remaining in the contest as the Crimson stunned the Dartmouth women's basketball team, 75-69, on Saturday evening at Leede Arena. Sophomore Fanni Szabo led the Big Green with 25 points on 10-of-24 from the field. Junior Lakin Roland added 12 points. Dartmouth shot 40 percent from the field and outrebounded the Crimson, 38-32.
Penn Series
The 72nd meeting between the Big Green and Quakers takes place this weekend at Leede Arena. The Big Green hold a 43-28 edge over the team from the city of Brotherly Love. Dartmouth snapped a six-game losing streak against the Quakers last season, 53-50, knocking off the soon to be Ivy League champion. Dartmouth began the series by picking up 19 wins in 23 tries. In three postseason meetings, the Big Green are 2-1.
Scouting the Quakers
Sydney Stipanovich leads Penn in scoring (10.8) and rebounding (8.1). The sophomore center has led the team in scoring in six games. She is the lone double-digit performer on the squad. Kathleen Roche and Kara Bonenberger are neck-and-neck at 8.7 and 8.3 points per game, respectively. Michelle Nwokedi was named this week's Ivy League Player of the week after averaging 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steal for the Quakers, who went 1-1 in a pair of games.
Princeton Series
The 73rd meeting between the Big Green and Tigers will complete the first full weekend of Ivy League play. The Big Green hold a 43-29 lead over the Tigers and are looking for their first win since 2009.
Scouting the Tigers
Princeton's three-headed monster — Blake Dietrick, Michelle Miller and Annie Tarakchian — has taken the league by storm, as the Tigers are currently ranked 19th in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll. Dietrick is averaging a team-best 15.8 points per game while Miller is at 12.9. Tarakchian is third in scoring (10.3), but leads the team in rebounds at 9.4.
Top 100 National Rankings
Dartmouth is second in Ivy League RPI and sits at number 126. Princeton (17-0) is the top dog in the Ivy fight at number 16 and remain as one of the two undefeated teams in the NCAA with South Carolina (18-0).
Defense Leads to Offense
Dartmouth is second in the Ivy League in defensive rebounds per game at 28.7. Penn leads the Ivies and is 22nd on the national scale, with Duke leading the way at 32.0 per contest. Not only is the team great at cleaning up the glass, but they are third in the Ivy League in field-goal defense at 36.0, which is 34th nationally. From the outside, opponents are shooting 27.3, which is good enough for second in the Ancient Eight and 54th in the NCAA. Szabo leads the Ivy League in points per game and is 48th in the NCAA at 18.4. Roland is second in the Ivies with seven defensive caroms a night and 17th in the NCAA.
Roland's 25 Points Lead Big Green In Ivy Opener
Roland led four Big Green players in double figures with 25 points and nine rebounds, as Dartmouth defeated Harvard, 76-61, at Lavietes Pavilion. Milica Toskovic added 15 points on 4-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the outside. Toskovic also had five rebounds, three assists, one block and one big defensive stop late in the contest. Fanni Szabo contributed 14 points from the Big Green and made key free throws late in the contest for the visitors. Off the bench, Katie Vareika was a spark plug once again connecting on all three from the outside and finished with 11 points.
Big Green Picked Sixth in Ivy Poll
Dartmouth was chosen tied for sixth place in the Ivy League preseason poll as announced by the League office on Oct. 28. Defending Ivy League champion Penn and previous league winner Princeton both received 123 votes for a share of the top spot. The Tigers though were granted nine first-place votes, while the Quakers had seven. Harvard was chosen third and also received one first-place nod. Yale secured fourth place, followed by Cornell, Dartmouth and Columbia in sixth, respectively and Brown in eighth.
