TROY, N.Y. – A hat trick by sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit lifted the Dartmouth women's hockey team past ECAC Hockey rival RPI, 3-0, in Houston Field House on Friday evening.
Ottenbreit opened scoring with 17 seconds remaining in the first period and tacked on two more in the final stanza. The Grayson, Saskatchewan native now has eight markers under her belt this season, which moves her to second on the team.
That is two straight for the Big Green, who are now 8-7-1 and 4-5-1 in conference action after a 2-1 showing on the road last week with wins over Northeastern and Brown and a loss to Yale. The Engineers fell to 4-14-3 and 2-7-0 in ECAC Hockey play.
"I thought we had a slow start to the game, but I think we got a bit better and a bit stronger as the game went on," head coach Mark Hudak said. "We did a really nice job at the end securing the shutout."
In a game that started in the RPI's favor, with their 6-1 edge in shots on goal, the Green turned it around by scoring the first goal of the night with the extra skater. Ottenbreit connected with classmate Eleni Tebano and junior Catherine Berghuis at 19:43 to take a 1-0 lead into the second period.
The Engineers' had one of their best chances at a goal at 7:27 in the middle stanza, when a shot by Laura Horwood forced sophomore netminder Robyn Chemago to make a big save to keep Dartmouth one goal ahead. The Engineers unleashed on Chemago, sending five shots her way in quick succession, but none of them posed much of a threat.
After seeing little action since the first goal, Dartmouth opened the third period with another goal at the hands of Ottenbreit, who received passes from senior Morgan Illikainen and junior Lindsey Allen before firing to the right of RPI goalie Kelly O'Brien at 7:36. At 17:39, soon after RPI pulled their goalie, Ottenbreit completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal. Chemago had a handful of point-blank saves in the final minutes of action to close out the game.
Dartmouth outshot RPI, 20-18. The Big Green went 2-for-4 on the power play, while holding the Engineers to 0-for-5. O'Brien had 15 saves in the loss, while Chemago ended the night with 20 saves as she earned her second career shutout.
The Green and White will return to action on Saturday when they take on conference foe Union at 4 p.m. in their last of six consecutive road games.
