SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – In a game of strong netminding from both sides, the Dartmouth women's hockey team won its second game of the weekend when it defeated ECAC Hockey rival Union by a score of 3-1 on Saturday.
The Green improved to 9-7-1 and 5-5-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while Union dipped to 4-15-3 and 1-9-0 in conference action.
"Overall, it was a pretty good game," head coach Mark Hudak said. "We had a lot of chances, but I thought the team did a good job staying patient and not getting frustrated and it paid off in the end."
The Green took control of the puck right from the start and, just seven minutes into the first period, had taken all nine shots, even though only one of them had to be saved by netminder Shenae Lundberg. At 8:10, sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit almost gave the Green their first goal of the night when her shot that was saved by Lundberg was nearly knocked into the net by the goalie herself. Both teams had a number of strong attempts, but the game went to the second locked at zero.
Early in the second, junior Laura Stacey fired at Union's net, hitting the inside of the left pipe, but the puck managed to bounce out of the net. The rest of the period proved to be just as aggressive as the first, which prevented either team from getting on the board.
At 2:55 in the third period, Dartmouth was finally able to solve Lundberg when Zoe Brennan scored her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career after connecting with freshman Hailey Noronha and senior Samantha Zeiss. With 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Kathryn Tomaselli took a point-blank shot at sophomore Robyn Chemago, but the Big Green goalie acted fast to make the save. At 15:41, Union's Erica Kelly found an opening and pocketed the puck in the right of the net to tie the game at one with 4:19 remaining in the period.
Less than three minutes after Union's lone goal, Ottenbreit scored the eventual game winner after a pass from Stacey at 18:34, netting her fourth of the weekend after scoring a hat trick against RPI on Friday. Less than 10 seconds later, the Dutchwomen pulled Lundberg and, at 19:12, Zeiss scored the final marker of the afternoon, with assists going to senior Karlee Odland and junior Ailish Forfar.
Dartmouth outshot Union, 26-15. Lundberg had a total of 23 saves in the loss, while Chemago stopped 14 shots while allowing just one goal.
After being on the road for over a month, the Big Green will return to Thompson Arena on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they host Ivy League and ECAC Hockey foe Harvard at 2 p.m.
