THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will play the last two of its six consecutive road games on Friday and Saturday, returning to New York for the first time since the start of the season to face ECAC Hockey rivals Rensselaer and Union.
LAST TIME OUT
Following a two-week hiatus, the Big Green had a packed schedule upon returning to the ice. Dartmouth defeated Northeastern by a score of 5-1 in its final game of 2014, before falling to Yale by the same score two days later. To conclude the weekend, the team from the Upper Valley had a 5-1 victory over Brown, picking up its first Ivy League win of the season. Karlee Odland led the team with five points on three goals and two assists and scored the lone goal against Yale. Lindsey Allen (3G, 1A) and Kennedy Ottenbreit (1G, 3A) both ended the weekend with four points, while Samantha Zeiss scored two of Dartmouth's five goals against the Bears. Robyn Chemago had a busy week between the pipes, ending up with 19 saves against Northeastern, 17 against Yale and 14 in the game against Brown.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
Following a 3-2 loss to Yale on home ice at the beginning of December, RPI redeemed itself almost a month later with a 4-3 victory over Princeton on Jan. 2. The Engineers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first two and half minutes of play and, even though the Tigers would tie the score twice throughout the course of the game, RPI would score the final goal of the game with eight minutes remaining in the second period and carry that slight edge until the final buzzer. The following day, the Engineers fell to No. 5 Quinnipiac, 1-0, when the Bobcats' Taylor Cianfarano netted the only goal of the game at 15:12 of the second period. On Tuesday, RPI had a 3-3 tie against Providence.
LAST TIME AGAINST RPI
On Nov. 11, the Green and White handed the Engineers a 5-2 loss in Thompson Arena, winning their third straight game to remain undefeated on the newly started 2014-15 season. Laura Stacey had the first and last Dartmouth goals, while Catherine Berghuis had two assists and a goal of her own to the lead the team. Ailish Forfar also had an eventful evening, having a hand in two of the five markers. After having a safe 2-0 advantage heading into the second period, things soon became interesting with a combined three markers occurring in a seven-minute span, and the game headed into the third stanza with a score of 3-2 in favor of the home team. In the final 20 minutes, Chemago made seven saves to prevent the opponent from finding the back of the net again, while Dartmouth tacked on two more markers to take the game. The Engineers' netminder, Kelly O'Brien, had an impressive 42 saves in the losing effort, while Chemago stopped 19 attempts.
SCOUTING THE DUTCHWOMEN
In the New Year, Union is 0-2-0 after being shut out by Quinnipiac (4-0) and Princeton (3-0) last weekend. Following a scoreless opening period, the Bobcats found the back of the net three times in the second stanza and would add another goal in the final stanza to complete the sweep. The next day, goalie Shenae Lundberg posted her second straight game with more than 30 saves, finishing with 32, but that wasn't enough to stop the Tigers, who scored once in the second and twice in the third period. Union's last victory was a 2-0 win over Maine on Dec. 12.
LAST TIME vs. UNION
In just its second game of the season, Dartmouth posted a 3-0 shutout over Union on Nov. 11. After Emma Korbs scored the first marker of the game at 6:54 in the first period with the help of Odland and Forfar, the game remained locked at 1-0 until a two-goal Big Green third stanza all but ended the game in favor of the home team. Chemago posted her first career shutout, totaling 13 saves, while Lundberg had 42 saves, turning away 14 shots during each of the three periods.
ECAC HOCKEY STANDINGS
With all teams back in action, the standings have changed, but only slightly. Quinnipiac remains top in the conference with an 9-1-2 mark following shutouts over Union and RPI over the weekend and a 3-1 victory against Princeton on Tuesday. Harvard – the only team to have marred the Bobcats' near perfect record so far this season – have moved into second with a mark of 7-1-1, while Clarkson is third with a 6-2-1 record. Dartmouth is in eighth at 3-5-1, behind Yale, who is 4-4-0. RPI, Brown, Colgate and Union all appear below the Big Green.
HUDAK & CO.
Having been with the Big Green women's hockey team since the 2003-04 season, Mark Hudak has compiled a record of 212-116-29 as he continues through his 12th season. His accomplishments with the team include two Ivy League titles, two ECAC Tournament titles, one ECAC regular-season title, six NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four showings. On the bench, Hudak is joined by associate head coach Holley Tyng, who is in her 10th season with the team, and assistant coach Josh Liegl, who returns to the Big Green coaching staff for his third year.
CAPTAINS
The Green and White are led by captain Karlee Odland, and alternate captains Illikainen and Catherine Berghuis. This is the first time since the 2010-11 season that just one player is wearing the 'C'. So far in the 2014-15 season, Odland leads with seven goals and five assists for 12 points. Following a strong weekend on the road, the Vauxhall, Alberta, native is now second on the team in goals. Illikainen has netted three goals and four assists, while Berghuis has two goals and four helpers of her own.
LEADING THE WAY
With her team-leading 13 goals and three assists, Allen leads the Big Green with 16 points. She is the only Big Green player so far this season to have scored a hat trick, let alone two, helping to lead Dartmouth to a 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Nov. 8 and a 6-2 win at Vermont on Dec. 14. Close behind are Stacey, who has 15 points from six goals and nine assists, and Ottenbreit with five markers and nine helpers for 14 points.
FRESH FACES
Four freshmen were added to the roster at the start of the season. The talented group consists of forwards Brooke Ahbe, Elena Horton and Morgan Turner, and defenseman Hailey Noronha. Ahbe was selected to the United States U18 National team that won silver at the U18 World Championships in Hungary this past year, while Noronha was a two-time member of the Canada U18 National Team that won gold in Budapest in March. Horton and Turner's teams have both played at the USA National Championships. Since first donning the Green and White uniform in October, Turner has netted one goal, Horton has tallied one assist and Ahbe has one goal and assist under her belt. Noronha leads the group with three helpers.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Chemago had a busy week between the pipes, ending up with 19 saves against Northeastern, 17 against Yale and 14 in the win over Brown. After playing every minute in net so far this season, she has 339 saves, which is already a career-high. She has allowed 41 goals, has a save percentage of .892 and has 2.72 goals against average. She had a season-best 38 saves against Harvard on Dec. 2.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR DARTMOUTH?
Having not played at home in almost a month, Dartmouth will host a trio of Ivy League games over the next two weekends. Harvard will arrive in Hanover for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 17 and will be the Big Green's lone contest of the week. On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24, Dartmouth will take on Cornell at 7 p.m. and Colgate at 4 p.m.
