ELLINGTON, Conn. — The Dartmouth men's golf team took advantage of the perfect weather conditions to finish the first two rounds of the Connecticut Cup at the par-72, 6,936-yard Ellington Ridge Country Club in second place out of the 16 teams in the field. Freshman
John Lazor ended the day in a tie for fourth place with a 142 (-2), one of six players to shoot under par on the first day of play.
The Big Green had the second-lowest score in each of the first two rounds as a team, shooting a scintillating one-under 287 to start the day before posting a four-over 292, matching host UConn with the latter score. After the first round, Dartmouth trailed TCU by just two strokes, but the Horned Frogs played even better the second time around and hold a 15-stroke lead going into the final round on Tuesday with a 564 (-12).
Lazor was matched by junior
Jeff Lang during the first 18 holes as both carded a two-under 70, while sophomore
Ian Kelsey hit par right on the nose. With senior
Dylan Rusk shooting a three-over 75, the quartet had the Big Green one stroke better than par.
In the second round, Lazor continued to lead the way for Dartmouth, posting a 72 (E) as did Rusk, with Kelsey one stroke behind. While Lang fell back in the standings with a 79 (+7), junior
Scott Jaster picked up the slack with a solid 75 (+3) to help keep the Green ahead of UConn by two strokes overall.
With Lazor leading the way in that tie for fourth in the 89-player field, Kelsey and Rusk also ended the day among the top 20 with the former tied for 11th with a 145 (+1) and the latter tied for 17th with a 147 (+3). Lang sits in a tie for 26th at five-over and Jaster is tied for 47th at nine-over.
Chelso Barrett and Paul Barjon of TCU will enter the final round in the top two spots on the leaderboard as each shot a 66 (-6) in one of the rounds on Monday. Barrett has a two-stroke lead over his teammate with a nine-under 135, while Zach Zaback of the Huskies is third at three-under.
