HANOVER, N.H. — Freshman Guilien Smith scored 14 points off the bench while senior Connor Boehm added 13 in just 16 minutes as the Dartmouth men's basketball team won its lone exhibition game of the preseason, 81-51, over Keiser University on Thursday night at Leede Arena.
Joining the duo in double figures were sophomore Miles Wright and freshman Evan Boudreaux with 11 points apiece while the latter led the Big Green with seven rebounds in a team-high 24 minutes.
Keiser's Devin McClenton led all players with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting with nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Andrija Sarenac added 11 and Brice Jenkins chipped in 10 for the Seahawks, which shot just under 40 percent (22-of-56) as a team.
McClenton provided the game's first points with a two-hand slam off a feed from Stanley Whittaker, but Dartmouth rattled off the next 20 points to quickly take command of the game. Boehm and Boudreaux scored the first 10 for the Big Green, and senior Kevin Crescenzi and Smith both drained three-pointers during the run.
A three-point play by Tyrus Weaved ended a Seahawk scoring drought that lasted 7:30, but sophomore Taylor Johnson answered right back by ripping the net from long range. When senior Malik Gill popped a pull-up 14-footer, the Big Green enjoyed a 21-point lead at 29-8 with 6:42 remaining in the half.
Dartmouth continued to extend its lead as Smith canned another triple and Boehm scored six more points, the last two coming on his steal and breakaway layup. When Johnson converted two foul shots in the final seconds, the Big Green led by 28 at the break, 43-15.
After playing a 10-man rotation in the first half, head coach Paul Cormier went deeper into his bench in the second stanza, and eventually all 18 players on the roster saw action. Keiser settled into the game after the intermission and was outscored by just two points over the final 20 minutes as the Seahawks shot 50 percent (16-of-32) after a woeful 25 percent (6-of-24) to start the game.
Outside of the 6-10 McClenton, Dartmouth had a distinct size advantage and took advantage on the boards with 38 rebounds to Keiser's 30. The Big Green defense forced 20 turnovers thanks in part to 11 steals, four by Gill, and Johnson finished the night with six of the team's 18 assists.
Dartmouth shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) for the game, including 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from three-point range, but was even deadlier at the line canning 17-of-20 (85 percent) with Wright knocking down all six of his freebies.
The Big Green open up the 2015-16 season on the road with a tough test to start things off at Seton Hall on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by the Fox Sports Network; check your local listings for the channel that will broadcast the contest in your area.
Notes: This was the first time Cormier coached against Rollie Massimino, the former Villanova coach that led the Wildcats to a national title in 1985. Cormier was coached by Massimino in high school and served on his staff at Villanova before taking the Dartmouth head job for the first time in 1984-85 … eleven of the 18 Big Green players scored in the game, including six points from Ball State transfer Quinten Payne who was making his Dartmouth debut … of the five players to play at least 20 minutes for the Green, two were freshmen — Boudreaux and Smith.
