HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball defeated Yale, 3-1 (29-27, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15) inside Leede Arena on Homecoming Friday night.
The Big Green, which improved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in Ivy League play, defeated the Bulldogs for the first time since a win of the same score on Nov. 7, 2009 and handed them their first conference loss of the 2015 season. Yale dipped to 8-5 and 3-1 in Ivy play.
Senior Paige Caridi and junior Emily Astarita ended the night with double-doubles. Caridi had 16 kills and 14 digs and Astarita had 20 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Zoe Leonard led both squads with 20 digs and senior Kayden Cook had 29 assists to lead both the Big Green and the Bulldogs.
“I am so proud of the team's effort tonight,” head coach Erin Lindsey said after the match. “It wasn't super clean statistically and some hitters really struggled at times, but we were able to come together and fight when it mattered. There were a few sets that were close and very back-and-forth, but it was good to see the players stay aggressive. We talked a lot about it at practice and I am really proud of the effort that the team made to focus on the game plan. Zoe had a very nice night as libero and did a great job passing and defending and helped us stay in system and feed the middles.”
Dartmouth came out swinging in the first set, scoring the first four points off two Astarita kills, one by Caridi and an error. The home team would remain comfortably ahead until a three-point run by Yale put the Green up by just one (21-20). The two teams traded points, with one team getting to match point before the other scored to tie things up once more. An error gave the first set to Dartmouth.
The Bulldogs would take control early in the second, going on two four-point runs to make it a 13-7 set in their favor. Three errors and two kills by Caridi tied the score at 18 and Dartmouth would make it 21-19 following a kill by Astarita, a Yale error and a service ace from Leonard. The Bulldogs tied things up at 23, but a Caridi kill and an error on the other side of the net put the Green one set away from victory.
Yale would have none of that and turned things around to take the third set. There were 17 ties in all and it was not until the very end of the set that Yale got ahead and fought hard to earn that win. An error by the visitors put Dartmouth up, 23-22, but three straight points by the Bulldogs off a kill and two Green errors gave Yale a 25-23 victory.
The Bulldogs carried that momentum to the fourth set, winning the first four points off two kills and two Dartmouth errors to give them a 4-0 lead before a kill by senior Allison Brady put the Big Green on the board. The home team turned things around with two four-point runs and soon held a 12-8 advantage. Trading points and with things at 20-15, Dartmouth went on to score six unanswerable points off kills by Cook and Caridi, an ace by freshman Sierra Lyle and three errors to wrap the match up.
Dartmouth will return to the court on Saturday when it hosts Brown at 5 p.m.
