ARLINGTON, TEXAS – After a stellar first half, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell, 51-44, to Jacksonville University at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.
The loss drops the Big Green to 0-4, while the Dolphins improve to 1-2 on the season. Sophomore guard Kate Letkewicz had a great game despite the loss, as she led her team with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Letkewicz was on fire from behind the arc going four of seven, as her squad shot 37 percent from three-point range.
Dartmouth head coach Belle Koclanes said her team looked to their football counterparts for inspiration after watching the Big Green captured their 18th Ivy League title.
In what was their best first half performance of the young season; Dartmouth came out strong out of the gate taking a 6-4 lead before the first media timeout. The Big Green continued to take advantage of the Dolphins' struggles shooting the ball after Lakin Roland added a three pointer just before the close of the quarter.
In the opening minutes of the second quarter, Dartmouth picked up where it left off when sophomore Andi Norman checked into the game and drained a three in what would be a huge quarter for the Big Green from behind the arc. Kate Letkewicz followed up Norman's trey with three consecutive three-pointers to give Dartmouth a 25-13 lead before the U-5 media timeout. The Big Green took a 28-17 lead, which was their largest of the season into the locker room at halftime.
“We talked about confidence,” Koclanes said. “We talk about that word all the time, particularly with this young group as we begun the season. Many people look at the record and see four losses, but I don't look at that at all. I look at four games of progress for us. Our team is playing better and learning their lessons from each game and that's what it's about right now. That's what this WNIT experience has been about for us.”
Letkewicz picked up where she left in the third as she opened the quarter with three-pointer. By the 9:40 mark, the Big Green had stretched their lead to 14, which was their largest of the game. Toward the end of the third and at the start of the final quarter Jacksonville started to creep back into the contest.
The Dolphins took their first lead of the game with 5:27 to play. A well-timed three by Roland tied the game at 40, however a 9-0 Jacksonville run in the game's final two minutes sealed the victory for the Dolphins. By the final buzzer, four Jacksonville players finished with double digits in points. Forward Kayla Gordon led her team with 13 points and 14 boards.
Dartmouth will return to Hanover on Saturday, Nov. 28 for a matinée tilt with Boston University. Tip off from Leede Arena is at 2 p.m.
